“Good value if all you need's a bed”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Basic but clean, friendly and modern, we stayed in a private ensuite room for just £30 to attend a friend's party nearby.

Bit annoying not having any toiletries/towels but the bed was fine and the hostel had everything else we needed for our short stay.

This was my first stay in a youth hostel for over 30 years, and the first ever with our kids. Youth hostelling has changed in the intervening years for the better: family rooms, accessing facilities all day and serving beer on an evening. The cost is slightly high but given the location and facilities, the value for money is excellent. We intend to visit more as a family in the future.

We stayed here last week for one night. We felt thoroughly welcome by the staff and the whole place is spotlessly clean.

My only complaint with this place was the prices. We paid £41 for a en-suite room for two which didn't include breakfast. This was £4.50 each extra.

We could have stayed at a B & B down the road for the same price and I thought the whole purpose of staying at a hostel was to take advantage of cheaper accommodation?

If you're not a member of YHA, each person has to pay a membership fee of £3 per night too.

Internet was £1 for 20 minutes - not exactly the best rates and this was extremely slow.

We did love the breakfast - the staff are great and made this experience despite the few areas that could be improved.

We stayed in an en suite family room:2 adults, 2 adolescents and one baby. The service we family, attentive and genuine. The rooms basic, but as it's recently built still has the freshness about it. The communal kitchen was adequate, the fridge clean and organized, with 2 kitchen units. The buffet breakfast ok, though tea and coffee a disappointment, though latte over the bar pleasant. The evening dinners pleasing: it's not haute cuisine, but a welcome sight after a day out, and a nice veggie option. Evening dinner was particuarly excellent value, given the kids ate free. Kids can run riot outside, and there's an indoor games room with wii. Could do with more toys for younger children. The place attracted a variety of guests; a hen night (not too rowdy!), forgeign visitors, older couples and families, which was super. One gripe is that the bedroom doors bang due to the heaviness and the fire door closer, and if your a light sleeper, or your baby is, Youre not going to get a great nights sleep.

Stayed here for three nights to break up a trip to the South of the Uk, as it makes a good base for Twycross Zoo, somewhere we wanted to take our kids.
It's a good location for a stopover as it's close to the motorway, and near lots of theme park type attractions. The local area is not the most beautiful part of the uk, but there is quite a lot to do nearby with young children, including the Conkers theme park which is just next door.
The place is very new, and spotlessly clean. Beds were very comfortable and all rooms en suite, with limitless hot water for showers.
There is large lounge and dining area, plus well equipped self catering kitchen. The hostel has a cafe and bar open until 11pm, and serve bistro type meals in the evening.
Our experience of the food there was very mixed. The breakfast was excellent, and good value. As were the packed lunches they provide. The first night we were there we were served a buffet evening meal as they had a large party in, and this was also very good quality. However, when served bistro service the following evening we had to complain about the food as it was so bad. It seemed as if (very friendly) staff had been charged with reheating and deep frying, and as a result the quality was really poor. We didn't eat there the following evening but had we planned to would have checked to see if it was the chef's night off or not!
Facilities for travelling with young children are adequate, with a wii, and some toys and games provided. However, the games room could have been much better equipped and provision of some more outdoor toys for children would have been very welcome and would have encouraged kids to mix more - one of the benefits of youth hostelling.
I would definitely stay here again if in the area as it's much better than a hotel or b&b when travelling with young children. A few minor improvements, and it would be perfect.

This hostel was a convenient overnight stop on our journey south through England . As a new purpose built hostel it provided a contrast with the traditional characteristic YH at Thurlby , some 60 miles due east, where we stopped on the way north.
National Forest cost £57 for a room for 2 (with ensuite & double bed) compared to £35 for a room with 2 bunk beds and sink at Thurlby. Thurlby was self catering only. Both hostels had an extremely high standard of cleanliness and service, well equipped kitchens and friendly staff. National Forest had internet facilities although we could not quite work out the cost or how to use them.
National Forest would seem ideal for families and school parties who want ready access to organized environmental activities; there appeared to be a lot going on around the hostel during the daytime. However if you are looking for budget accommodation, enjoy making your own meals and are prepared to make your own way around the area then I would suggest that you seek out the A1 rather than the M1 and call in at Thurlby YH as a much cheaper option.
We tried some of the walking trails at National Forest but got lost twice and gave up. There is a real need for better signs - there are no directions from the hostel, the coloured markers petered out and one of the main notice boards had been vandalised.

We're told this is one of the new breed of youth hostel: eco-friendly, with high quality accommodation, flexible pricing and plenty of food and drink options (here, including cappuccino and well stocked bar!).

I welcome these developments, but the key attraction for many hostel visitors is the low cost, and I think this selling point has been lost in the case of YHA National Forest.

We paid over £20 a night for our basic bunks in a four-bedded room (shared with strangers). Breakfast was good, but £4.50 extra and we enjoyed our evening meals too but main dishes cost over £7.00.

Many travellers (especially from abroad) wish to keep in touch with loved ones at home, but the YHA charge of 7p a minute for Internet access is excessive to say the least.

This hostel has many good points, but you could get your own private room, and full sized bed with breakfast included, for around £50/room at a local B&B.
