“Average at best.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013 via mobile

Usually have a nice time at the tall chimney but unfortunately this time it came up very short from the frosty reception to the very average food and even thwn halfway through our dinner the waitress came around opened all the big windows and strolled off without seeing the devastation left behind by all the menus blowing around..all in all just a bit average.

“Three's a crowd”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2013

Went to the Tall Chimney for Sunday Lunch. Getting parked and finding a table was not a relaxing experience but probably par for the course on Sundays. The Tall Chimney is a large, spacious establishment, set out to cater for diners with the occasional group of young drinkers around. Very much a place for all ages, well decorated and with many families in for lunch. Service was friendly and pretty quick considering the crush ( as people were starting to wait around for tables I suspect the staff were under pressure to get people in and out). The food was of reasonable price and quality ( fish not battered to death) although somewhat lacking in flavour. Overall ok for a quick bite.

Given the midday crowd and the fact that you cannot book a table for less than ten people probably will not go again at peak times.

“Another great hungry horse”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2013

We are regulars to hungry horse pubs in Nottingham so thought we would give the tall chimney a go on the way back from Liverpool . It did not disappoint the food and service were just as good as we are use to in Nottingham .it was a busy Saturday night but the service was still quick and efficient. The manager (I think his name was gaz) was excellent, running around motivating the staff, although he did look very tired ( I guess that what happens when you work all weekend in a busy pub) back to the Nottingham hungry horses for now but will definately call in again.

“Good but a fairly miserable barmaid!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

Visited recently for a lunchtime meal. The establishment is situated on the edge of a retail park so parking is easy and plentiful. Its well located for a trip to the dry ski slope just around the corner.

Not sure how old the place is but it’s very modern, well presented and maintained. All the usual trappings which you would expect for a Hungry Horse establishment. Menu is the same whichever one you visit. Guess that provides a consistency and expected standard level.
Apart from the most miserable bar-maid ever, who instructed with such verbal monotone “There is no small or large soft drink size its all standard sized” the rest of the staff were cheery and pleased to help.

Good service, reasonable food. Better quality than expected I must say. We only opted for a lunch meal, nothing fancy. Jacket potatoes with corn on the cob. You can’t really mess those up. Spuds were a great size. The wait from order to receipt was not overly excessive and you order/pay at the till with your table number.

Free colouring kits for kids and big kids.

We will return just to see the Swadlincote’s most miserable barmaid!
