We'd heard this is a great place for a wedding, but as a place to eat mid week, a little disappointing.
Location - lovely, service - good - food not outstanding. My wife had a 'special' of Thai curry which she had to send back as too salty. The chef agreed and it came off the specials board. I had baked salmon (£12.50) and so did my wife after the curry was returned. We started with sushi which was tasty (£5.50). The atmosphere wasn't relaxed as there was both a TV and background music playing. Being a Tuesday night, dinner was served in a mini-restaurant to the side of the sports bar. I guess it might be better on a weekend in the main restaurant. However I don't feel we got great value for money on this occasion. Probably won't return to Santos for dinner unless it's a function we are invited to, which is a shame as we live 10 minutes away.

To start on a positive, our meals were excellent, truly prepared to a very high quality and certainly worth the quite high (for the area) price. Service? Not quite so premium.

In fairness, the service we received at our table was fine, perhaps not quite as good as you would expect for the price paid, but certainly wouldn't be an issue in itself. What we found lacking is that we had booked a table for 19:45, but were told to wait in the bar for service. We finally had our meal orders taken (still in the bar) at 20:10 and were shown to our table at 20:30. All without any explanation...

Santo's is a popular event venue, weddings and parties alike, so while we assumed that this was the cause of the delay we were given no notice upon arrival that this would be the case and not once were we given a reason why we were seated 45 minutes late - particularly as when we finally were taken to our table the restaurant was no more than half full.

Great, great food, but could just do with tightening up on keeping both parties and other paying guests happy too.

My Mum booked a family meal here for my Dad's birthday, with the aim of going somewhere special. We looked up the website and were very excited to see the menus and their promise of fine food. As we were going on a Sunday, Mum had specifically asked if the normal menus were also available (particularly as there are two vegetarians in the party), and was told we could order anything.

We did have an enjoyable time, but the experience was a little odd!
1. Sunday lunchtime, and the place was like the Marie-Celeste - we had booked for 12:30, and until 13:00 we were the only people in the dining room. The bars and other rooms were dark and unmanned. There are fireplaces around, none were lit.
2. The decor is like a scaled up 1970's bistro, with some classier elements e.g. the stone walls and marble counter tops, decent quality furniture - although some of it has been around for a while, so is dated. On the other hand we have white artexed walls with wagon-wheels embedded - we thought we'd stepped back in time...
3. The service, when it was there (there were noticeable gaps) was efficient, if somewhat morose in places. Even though it was silver service, it felt like we were "in the way" at times - not how it should be.
4. The food, as provided on the limited Sunday lunch menu (so Mum's query about the menu options was answered incorrectly) was reasonably good. The non-veggie options worked well enough if you like "meat and two veg done well" type meals - nothing wrong with it, well-cooked, just not very exciting. For the veggies, we had to have the penne arabiatta - again, as such dishes go, it was ok (again, uninspiring) - but very strange to be offered boiled and roast potatoes, carrots, sweetcorn and broccoli to go with it. I always ask the question "could we have cooked this food ourselves?" and in this case, the answer was a definite "yes" - so nothing to write home about.

Overall, we enjoyed ourselves, but mainly as we were out for a family meal so would have had a good time in any case. The restaurant itself didn't really add much to the experience.

Santo's felt like it didn't quite know what it wanted to be - high-class fine-dining, trattoria, pub, who-knows? It seems to be trying to be all of these things, but not quite getting there with any of them.

We hadn't been to this restaurant for many years and had heard good reports about it so decided to give it a try.
Sitting in the bar we began to wonder if we might be disappointed, the decor being rather shabby and mis-matched, to say the least. But the menu was good, the wine list was good and once we were seated at our table things began looking up. I do like crisp white tablecloths, nice tableware and good service and am happy to say we were not in the least disappointed with our meal. It was tasty, beautifully presented and served with care.
We had an excellent meal and will add this to the places where we are happy to eat regularly.

We visit Santo's regularly throughout the year. We havemalways found the staff to be attentive and pleasant, so it seemed the right venue to visit for Christmas lunch.

The atmosphere was very jolly. The staff were all ready to help and did their best to make us feel special. The hotel was decorated with tasteful Christmas decorations. Service in the bar was very good and when we went through for lunch staff were welcoming, and we were told by Vincent to let the staff know if there was anything we required. All the food was hot, appitizing, pleantiful and tasted delicious. The turkey and the steak were both very good and we were impressed by the fact we did not dine until 2:00pm' (we requested this time) and the vegetables were still well cooked and not over cookes. It was nice to see Santo carving the turkey and he also visiting each table to check guests were happy with their meal.

As always, it was a nice family atmosphere and I would like to congratulate staff on an excellent visit.
