Upon arrival the exterior of the hotel is beautiful with traditional features. We did get a little baffled by the barrier across the car park but we soon discovered we just needed an exit code (you could park as a non-hotel guest for a very reasonable amount however, which is very handy at peak times).
The reception was directly in front of you as you entered the main doors; with the restaurant to your left and the lounge to your right. The lady on reception was very friendly and welcomed us, asked us about our journey and asked if we would like to book in for dinner at the restaurant. We requested to see the menu first and was told that if we had any special requirements we could talk to the chef and make an alternative menu!

As it was the day after valentine's day it was very busy so we would have only been seated at 9pm. Not a problem as being in Hathersage you're near to Hope and Castleton so plenty of places to choose from.

We were shown to our ground floor room, a little bemused as we had to go up a flight of stairs, along a corridor and down another flight of stairs; this wasn't a problem for us however someone in a wheelchair or with limited mobility would struggle.

The room was recently decorated with matching wallpaper and blinds. The bed was comfy and there were two huge pillows each, usually I need at least three hotel pillows as they're too flat for me but these were the best I've experienced. A cute touch to the room was "Huggie" an adoptable teddy bear, which brought a smile to our faces.
(Although, maybe not ideal when travelling with children who will want to adopt the teddy.)

Breakfast was amazing. There was a buffet with cereals, fruit, yoghurt, milk and fruit juices. There was also a variety of teas and coffees (even filtered decaf!) brought to your table along with a selection of toast and pastries (croissant & apple Danish). Also included in the room rate was a cooked selection: my partner going for the full English and myself going for american style pancakes with a blueberry & vanilla coulée (delicious).

Checking out was very straight forward and the receptionist was just as friendly as the one we had seen the previous evening.

We stayed over Christmas and as ever the George combined friendly service with good standards. The bedrooms are comfortable and there's a nice relaxed feeling in the lounge in the evening, just right for a quiet drink.

The food is good, but perhaps they could try some slightly simpler dishes sometimes as we were eating there for a few days and it all got a bit exhausting, leaving me longing for beans on toast. You can take the girl out of the north but you can't take the north etc etc

Good with children and although it's not cheap the staff work very hard indeed to make everyone feel at home.

Our son and his girlfriend took us away for a treat. They had stayed here before and had been impressed. We were too. The food is outstanding , tasty and beautifully presented. The staff can't do enough for you and everyone greeted us with a smile and a greeting. The rooms are comfortable and nicely furnished and warm. We will certainly return.

We went for afternoon tea here after reading about it on the website.

I know its a bit of a theme for me, whether places are warm or cold, but the sight of the fire in the large hallway was very welcoming. It felt nice and comfortable, and we diecided to sit there to have our tea.

The meal was lovely-everything was fresh and tasty, the scone and brownie were warm. The waiter noticed when we'd poured our first cup, before tasting it, that the tea looked like assam, not the Earl Grey ordered...so he replaced it. Wow, .most places wouldnt know the difference so this was impressive!

We took lots of pictures of the place, as it was so nice. Ive recommended it to my friends and hope to go back soon.

It would have been even nicer had there been some background music....something classical like Mozart or Chopin would have been just perfect.

My husband and I booked this hotel as a break away before Christmas. We booked the special package that included bubbly, flowers and chocolates in the room as well as dinner, bed and breakfast.

The hotel was lovely, tastefully decorated throughout, and clearly well maintained and the staff were very welcoming.

As the weather was poor, we explored the local area by car, and then headed back to the hotel for a relax by the fire and a warming hot chocolate (very tasty!).

Dinner on both nights was excellent, cleverly crafted menus and beautifully presented and served by the staff. As well as looking good, the food was delicious! We just wished we were staying longer to try more of the dishes!

Breakfasts were also tasty and a good way to set you up for the day.

The rooms were very smart but cosy, but most impressive was the power shower - you couldn't have it on full! The only downside I would say is that the draft created by the shower meant that the shower curtain kept sticking to me!

Christmas day lunch, very helpful staff, superb lobster bisque, fantastic salmon course, poor main course. Turkey cold and very dry, no stuffing as we would know it and inedible bread sauce.
However the xmas pudding was a delight and one of the best we have ever tasted. A lovely hotel in a pretty village setting.

Room Tip: Obviously very well run. All staff happy, nothing too much trouble.
