We were enjoying drinks in the lounge before being seated. At no point were we offered menus (we had to ask), following this no one was forthcoming to take our order. When we asked politely if someone could take our order a rather rude member of staff ( I recall his name but shall not mention it) said that our table was booked for 2030 and as it was 2025 he would not take our order. Although this seemed rather pedantic it was actually the quite abrupt and rude manner in which he talked which we found rather upsetting. He re-emerged around 10 minutes later and took our order but then did not offer to seat us and we were not seated until about 2045. Luckily at this point our care was taken over by a very polite lady who was very attentive and apologised without us saying anything for the fact we were seated late. Finally to the important part. Food was very very good. Between our group we had a selection of starters all of which were well presented and with a taste to match. Main courses were good, perhaps lacking slightly if one is vegetarian. Desserts were sublime and we were offered coffee and petits four in the lounge. Would return but hope the initial service is improved.

The George is a beautiful old stone built hotel right in the heart of Hathersage. The breakfasts are particularly excellent and take advantage of the local produce. Parking is easy as the hotel has its own (and Hathersage parking can be difficult to fine at the height of the season). Rooms are quite small but perfectly functional.

We ate here late on Friday evening when the restuarant wasn't terribly busy. Both the bar and the restuarant were very spacious and the whole atmosphere felt very relaxed and calm. The menu had 5 or 6 choices for each course and the food was tasty and magnificently presented - quite works of art. I will definitely be back

The atmosphere is quite subdued and quiet.
Service ok, but nothing to shout about.
Food quite nice for the price.

I wouldnt want to travel too far to this restaurant, but a pleasant dinner out.

Three of us called for luncheon unnanounced. Staff from the start were interested and charming. Luncheon from the restaurant menu was excellent and good value for money. The waiter who had served our drinks in the lounge took over the service of our luncheon and was faultless. The set menu produced very good dishes with three choices per course all were competently cooked. Our Jurançon was excellent and professionally served. All in all a most pleasant visit. Well done.
