“Smokers paradise”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

It's not a hotel - it's a pub with rooms for rent. You have to pass through a crowd of beerdrinking gentlemen (and their wives) from Glossop to get to your room. There is no reception, there is a bar...Don't put your creditcard directly on the bardesk - it will stuck. Breakfast is served in the function room - or in the pub, if the function room has not yet been cleened up from yesterdays party.
My "non-smoking"-room was just above the entrance to the pub, and all the evening smokers was having their party outside on the pavement - as well as the guests from the pub on the opposite corner. Staff wasn't unfreindly, but mostly occupied by serving in the bar.
Breakfast OK, WiFi OK, Shower OK.

As a town Centre property we do not have a beer garden or an allocated smoking area, the only place for people to smoke is at the front of the Hotel. We do not advertise to be anything that we are not. We offer good value accommodation to include a full English Breakfast and free Wiifi. At £35.00 per night you would struggle to find anything within the area to match our service and accommodation.

I booked the George for my son's christening - never again! We have used the pub for family meals and always been satisfied with the food. I booked for a christening and arranged that all our families ordered and paid seperately for sunday lunches - in total no more that 25 covers - it was 2 hours beforethe last table was served.....their starters! The staff did not come in to the function room to check we had everything we needed (nor did they attempt to pour/serve the welcome drinks), they didn't clear the tables of bottles and glasses, we had to repeatedly go to the bar to chase food and in the end my 1 year old son had to make do with snacks from the co-op across the road. Disgraceful. To add insult to injury the bartender argued with me about an outstanding tab for £6.50 for two deserts (which were ordered from the wrong menu as the staff could not be bothered to tell my guests which puddings were on the set sunday lunch). By the way, George Hotel you still owe me for my baby son's meal which I had ordered and cancelled an hour and a half in to the debacle. I would never use this venue for a function again as they have neither the organisation or customer service skills to handle more that small numbers.
On a seperate note the language in the bar area is shocking - George Hotel you need to decide what your target market is and stick with it as some of your 'clients' should keep their shouting and swearing to working mens clubs and not in a family venue.

These are people who booked the Function room in January for a Christening and did not pay the £100.00 deposit to secure the room, that we request within 14 days. After several telephone messages they still didn't pay the deposit so the booking was cancelled by ourselves. The week running up to the event the lady came into the Hotel to say that they were still coming but guests would be ordering from the bar snack menu on an individual basis. She ordered 2 bottles of our cheapest sparkling wine and a jug of orange juice for arrival. While the lady says she booked the room for a christening she reserved it without a deposit and would not supply a buffet for her guests as most people do - this became obvious to us that this was a large party clearly ordering snacks on the day, wanting the service of a party but was clearly unwilling to pay for it. When I telephoned her the day she had visited the Hotel (4 days before the event), the lady was told that if 25 people order and pay for food on an individual basis this would cause a delay with a wait on food. It was explained to her that for parties of 10 or more we require pre orders - she was unwilling to do this. From the George Hotels point of view with no deposit, failure to respond to telephone calls and an unwillingness to pre order we were unsure if this group would even arrive. This was clearly a group wanting the pomp and ceremony but was clearly unwilling to pay for it. Manager

We booked in as a group; and were looking for a cheap weekend away. We weren't expecting to find the George to blow us away, as it wasn't expensive (£190 for B&B for 8 people). The bar area has recently been rennovated and it was quite a nice and welcoming start to our stay.

If you head to the George make sure you find out where you can park, we found space in the road opposite so that was handy. If you travel by train you cannot beat the location as it's yards away!

The room - beds were fine, not the nicest rooms I've ever seen. The shower couldn't make it's mind up - hot/cold/hot! There was a house alarm and then car alarm going off all night but this isn't any fault of the Hotel. After a days walking around Kinder we hardly noticed the noise anyway!

Glossop is a handy location if you're off for a walk - only a few miles away, and the town has decent facilities. The Norfolk Arms pub just a short walk away was a ncie pub with a decent atmosphere.

We had a meal at Kwei Ping Chinese in the town - this place serves amazing food! Highly recommended!

In summary, I'd say you get what you pay for. The hotel isn't the greatest - but the people are very helpful, the breakfast was decent enough. If we travel as a group to the area again we would certainly consider the George.

The George Hotel is a simple place to stay but is very out-dated and old. £60 for a double room for a night is too much for this standard of hotel. That said, the staff at breakfast were very friendly & helpful.

Seemed ok till we had to spend any amount of time in room. Shower would be better if water came out of it at a good temperature and not as a cold trickle. Woke up a few times in night as we were so cold , duvet wasn't much use , found spare blankets next morning :0( door to room was really noisy so felt bad whenever we went in or out because of disturbing other guests. Kids bunk-beds didn't seem the safest in the world and one of the slats had a crack in it. Room was clean but towels provided were really basic , I have thrown better ones away. The breakfast looked ok , mistake , there were only another 4 people in there to eat but out of our party of 6 , 2 people had finished breakfast before others had even got any. When we did get it well then it proved to be not worth the wait. The sausage was some indescribable piece of so called meat , the mushrooms must have been cooked the week before and reheated daily and the extra added eggshell was a bonus ! If anyone had bothered to ask us if we slept ok or if breakfast was ok then I probably wouldn't feel the need to be on here writing this but we didn't even get to check out properly , just left the door key on the bar and let ourselves out. This could be a fantastic place if the same care was taken with guests as with people in the pub for a meal. Food totally different in day and quite enjoyable , what goes wrong with breakfast and the shrivelled mushrooms , dried out black pudding ,fresh tomatoes that haven't seen any heat , the beans must have been reheated quite a few times and the so called sausage was the worst thing I have tasted in years Could be fantastic , would love to visit glossop again but don't think i would if it meant I had to stay here again , disappointed :0(

We stayed here for one night and I asked for a double room. We got a double room but it was tiny, (and was two single beds pushed together - so no cuddling in the middle!) you could hardly walk round the bed and there was a wall heater on the wall that you had to be careful not to trip over the cable. The lighting in the room was dingy, towels were threadbare and the breakfast was errr...different - put this way, I have no idea what the sausages were made of!
Staff were friendly enough, but if I was going back to Glossop I would look for somewhere else to stay.

I stayed here with a work colleague for a few weeks in November and December and found it to be very good value. The rooms are clean and warm with good TVs and good internet access. Also they are properly serviced every day. Breakfast is great, full English, and if anything else is required, just ask! The ONLY problem that we had was parking the van. On the first day we parked in the station car park opposite, and got a warning ticket in the morning. I would advise anyone to park behind the hotel by the Police Station. Overall, a big ThankYou to Juliette, Maggie and the staff.
