“Peace and quiet”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

A warm and inviting hotel set in beautiful surroundings with friendly and welcoming owners, who give fantastic service. All of the rooms were clean and elegant, and we wanted for nothing during our stay. Our bedroom in particular was comfortable with great attention to detail in its decoration, with a spacious en suite bathroom. The food was impressive and meal choices varied; a contender for high-quality dining at top price restaurants. Overall, a lovely, relaxing place to stay!

Nice country house but very overpriced for B&B. A bit too quiet. Sign to House a bit tatty on the road entrance we nearly missed it. Very clean bedroom and bathroom. We needed a draw in the bedroom for our smalls. Breakfast very good but had to ask for everything nothing laid out and no yoghurt. Owner had not read Wind in the Willows and did not know what one of the plaques on the porch door was an award for. Did not eat evening meal at £30 a head as the menu did not appeal to us.

Room Tip: we stayed in Ratty room overlooking garden. Steep stairs to room.

Dear Terry,

Thank you for your review.

Sorry, but we must first of all point out a few facts.

We are not a B&B.

We are a officially classed as a Country House Hotel by the UK Hospitality Inspectors, as we offer lunch and dinner to our guests who also may use the building round the clock during thier stay.

The "Ratty" room you stayed in does, in fact, have several draws within the room furniture.

Breakfast is personally ordered from our extensive breakfast menu, cooked freshly to order, and personally served to the table. We choose not to have mountains of food items left out for up to 2 hours, buffet style.

As owners, we are well aware of our several proud awards. However, an old prestigious plaque from the previous owners time is still mounted on the wall.

Our early Victorian country house does indeed have typical original Victorian features which include feature stairs which are of ample width, if not overly generous.

That said,

However, we do genuinely regret that you did not appreciate your discounted hotel double room rate of £104.17 plus vat, and that the hotel was only 50% occupied.

A fantastic country house hotel. The owners are lovely people who give excellent service. The bedroom, sitting rooms and dining room are lovely. Food excellent. Would recommend without hesitation. The hotel is set in beautiful rolling countryside.

I have stayed in 5 star accommodation which is not to the standard of this first class family run hotel. If you want a break from the boring old chains then this is the place to be. Close by you have the lovely town so your not a million miles away from it all but you sure feel like you are. The grounds of the hotel are lovely and the views from the rooms are great as well. There's plenty of walks at hand with lots of trails to get your feet muddy and the roads are great for cycling. The rooms themselves are peacefully quite and the beds are super comfy ( so much so i slept in!!). I will definitely return and would recommend you give this hotel a try as well.

We had to find a hotel at short notice on a bank holiday weekend and found this hotel on the web. They were extremely welcoming, contacting us in advance to see if we wanted to book dinner. We didn't but we did need a taxi booked; this they did and confirmed by e-mail within half an hour. On arrival we were greeted with a pot of tea and shown round. Some of the features were dated, but all worked and added to the homely feel. We would certainly stay there again.

This is my second review of this wonderful country hotel, we have recently returned from our third visit and as always nothing was too much trouble for hosts Ian and Alison. This time we introduced our friends to this little gem and they too found the whole experience delightful. We had dinner which was excellent, definitely recommended with a pre dinner drink in the lounge first, nothing was rushed and we were allowed to sit and chat but Alison was never too far away if we needed anything. All in all this hotel is well worth a visit, the rooms are lovely and the ambience is just right. Ian and Alison always ensure that your stay is a good one, we particularly look forward to breakfast, it's one of the best breakfasts we've had, everything is really fresh and cooked to perfection, specially the poached eggs!! We are already planning our next visit!

Room Tip: Each room is different and they all have their individual charm, the view from Lucy Ann and toad hal...
