“A Very Strange Experience”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

I don't enjoy writing poor reviews but this place is strange so feel potential visitors should be warned. The owner has installed a new carpet and is very precious about it. You have to wear plastic shoe covers to enter the cafe area. This was a first for us and probably should have been a a warning sign. The cafe itself is nicely furnished and has a pleasant feel. However after putting on the plastic shoe covers it was necessary to wash our hands. Sadly there was no soap in the toilet and despite asking three times no member of staff seemed able to resolve this simple problem. The cafe was not busy (maybe the shoe covers were putting people off) but the two staff members were somewhat flustered and struggled to get our order right. Tea was served without milk. The Derbyshire cream tea was served with Cornish cream and one of the scones was lovely, warm and fresh, whilst the other scone was dry and stale. The other cakes we had were not the freshest. Overall is was pretty poor experience. There are lovely places to eat in Castleton but from our experience this isn't one of them.

The causeway has recently been beautifully decorated along with new flooring. The shop opened under new management at Easter and yes shoe liners are available for all customers who wish to dine with muddy boots. We are muddy boot friendly and we do offer homemade fresh scones on a daily basis. Staff are fully trained and with due respect, on the day you visited us everything was brand new and staff were familiarising themselves with new equipment in preparation for our opening. I can only apologise for any inconvenience caused on your visit and we hope to see you again at the causeway soon.
