I have always visited Castleton as an area, and throughout the years have always been drawn back to the place in general due to its charm. One visit I popped into The Castle pub for a drink when on a visit with my partner and family, and although it is a chain pub (Vintage Inn) we were overwhelmed by the walkers atmosphere, real ale drinks and log fires.

This led to us looking into booking a stay (for us as a couple only this time), our first being in 2011 and our second in 2012. On both occasions we took advantage of the 3 nights for 2 offer and have had fantastic breaks.

We have stopped in the main building both times (we specifically requested views of Mam Tor and therefore our rooms were on the main road through Castleton), we didn't experience noise and both rooms we had were extremely comfortable. We have just returned from our second stay here, again on the 3 nights for 2 offer and are pleased to say that service has not faltered.

Postives from both stays -
The cleanliness and presentation of the hotel/pub is exceptional. The pub very cosy, especially when log fires are on and the rooms are decorated fitting with the building. We often bumped into the cleaner in the morning (and wish we asked for her name). She was always jolly and she really presented the rooms to a high standard.

Breakfast is continental; cereals, breads, juices, tea, coffee, pastries etc. Buffet being a bonus. Suits needs for everyone, and the buffet helps especially for those who are setting themselves up for a days walk.

It wasn't only the cleaner who we found friendly. When we checked in this time around, Neil the licensee was on hand (even though we were early) and gave us a friendly welcome. He then actually served us for dinner and took the time to speak to us about the pub, hotel, surrounding area etc. It was great to have that extra bit of attention. All of the other staff who served us for dinner, although very busy. always made sure they treated us to the standard you'd expect.

All in all, we found both stays to be amazing value. We had 3 nights for £117, £39 a night, by far the cheapest in the surrounding area.

Castleton is a great place to have lazy walks, long walks and is also a great place to venture further afield, some of the places we want to do or have done from there are - Kinder, Derwent Water, Stannage Edge, Bamford Edge, Edale, Froggatt's Edge. The Castle hotel and pub provides a fantastic base!!!

Do not hesitate to book it up!

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building have a great view of Mam Tor (except the Peveril and Mam-Tor room). Rooms in the outer building are the other side of the car park.

An excellent place to spend some time in an excellent area, at a price that won't break the bank.
A very old pub with lodging rooms in a separate building. The staff are extremly helpful and friendly, I was surprised to see comments to the contrary in earlier reviews.
The rooms are of a reasonable size and very clean and well furnished.
The food is excellent. On looking at the menu we noticed there were very few vegetarian meals showing on the menu, but on asking another very helpful bar person, she went to the kitchen and returned with a bit of paper showing another six specials that the chef would do. We selected one of the meals and it was excellent.
Breakfast was included too, though it is only a continental breakfast, which may disappoint some people, but it was perfect for us, not liking vast amounts of food at breakfast.
Overall an excellent hotel and we hope to visit again soon for a little longer.

Stayed two nights, staff tip top especially Trudy. Lovely log fire, good beer, pretty good food and well positioned with 6 pubs in total the furthest just 3 minutes away. Caslteton is a friendly and very scenic place to visit so dont turn your toes up before you visit as its a must. Thanks to all the staff at The Castle we very much enjoyed our visit. Mark n Mel x

Room Tip: We heard various whispers and apparently room 13 top notch we had room 5 but we liked it. very warm indeed and a nice bathroom it did the job for us and for Castleton it was good value.

The photos really are not justice for the room we stayed in, room 12. I have a friend who recommended this place, as I said I would like to stay somewhere with a bit of a spice. Rachael told me The Castle was haunted, and may it sound crazy perfect for my 40th birthday. My boyfriend phoned and asked for the haunted room which is either room 4 or 12. Promise room 12 was a lovely modern room, a fantastic energy to a supposed haunted room.

The story is we witnessed furniture being moved around and Eddie saw a lady with her hair up in a bun wearing glasses. It is very hard to believe unless you see something yourself, I didnt see a thing as it was 4am and i had celebrated my birthday with lots of champagne i was sound asleep. The furniture move was the thing that proved to me something was there but honesly i am going back, it was a fantastic experience. And remember if you dont want to see a ghost your safe with any room apart from room 4 or 12. Castleton is a truly fantastic place, a must for outdoor people.

Room Tip: All i will say is i was shocked how gorgeous room 12 was compared to photos. maybe they are doing the rooms up bit by bit. food lovely as well.

My partner and I, decided to take a little trip not too far from home just for a break away from the normal daily grind and it was wonderful. We stayed for 2 nights at the end of September in room 17 which a previous reviewer said had damp in the corner and I am pleased to say that wasn't there when we went and the room was too warm if anything and certainly not damp. So they had obviously remedied any previous issues (always good to have a quick turn round on maintenance). The room was a bit of shock, we were expecting to be above the pub and when we were directed to this door outside the hotel, we were a little apprehensive. At first we were shocked that our door went straight on to the pub garden and it was a disabled room but we actually really came to like it. Being out on to the pub garden turned out to be a blessing we were away from everybody in a quite little corner, we didn't have anyone waking us up as they came in late at night. We were far enough away not to hear the pub garden noise but close enough to the pub to still feel part of it. We had a beautiful view out towards Mam Tor. The room was spotlessly clean and although storage space is a little tight, with a small rail we managed just fine with our weekend bags on top of the cupboard above the rail. The bathroom was huge as it was a wetroom, it was a little chilly if the extractor had been left on, but otherwise lovely, the shower was hot and powerful and it was all spotless, although the shower curtain fitted where it touched. The bed was comfortable, nice big pillows and quilts and we both slept excellently, although it does need 2 bed side tables and lamps, not 1 table, 1 lamp and a chair. I found this a little bizarre. We had food in the hotel and although not gastro pub food it is very tasty, a bit more restaurant than pub food. The staff deserve a mention as the are absolutely fantastic Hannah and Mel. Were brilliant, they couldn't do enough for you! You name it they'd help you out. Overall we thought it was a lovely room, in a lovely little quaint hotel, in a beautiful village. We would stay again and we would stay in this room.

Room Tip: Room 17 is away from the main pub looking towards Mam Tor.
