“Lovely B&B”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

I can only echo whats other have said:
- location 2 min walk from the main street
- you can start your walks straight from the B&B
- very generous breakfast
- friendly owner ready to give tips on the area
- Garden room (double bed) roomy for two with a nice view to the valley. Room has maps and books about the region.

Definitely a recommendable place to stay!

After making provisional booking, which was not acknowledged. Despite 5 telephone calls, no contact from this establishment, until Thursday afternoon, then being told by the owner that she is not computer literate and that her daughter who deals with the web site, was on holiday. She then informed me our booking was cancelled.
Not good enough.

Thank you for your response to our establishment "Hillside House", in Castleton, I am sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the enquiry that you had made for accommodation in August.

With regards to the visit Peak District and Derbyshire website with whom you tried to book through-it is their policy that an owner has a 24 hour period in which to accept or decline an enquiry. The owner Mrs Webster left you 2 phone messages; within this time frame, before speaking with you directly; to inform you that the nights which you had required had already been booked.

It is our normal procedure to ask guests to pay a small deposit to secure their room and stay with us, I believe however that no money changed hands on this occasion, therefore "Hillside House" can accept no responsibility for the issues which you have.

Just back from a weekend in castleton. This B&B is a short walk from the village, with plenty of parking space. This was the best nights sleep we have ever had in castleton. For me it was like the real castleton being in a family home, it was very quiet and just the sound of sheep. Fabulous views from the conservatory over the garden. Our room was hillside and was lovely but expect the garden view room is even better. Spacious room, very clean and loved the boot tray under the bed, what a good idea. Friendly owner and a magnificent breakfast to set you up for those long walks.

Room Tip: Garden View Room for best view

We have spent here two nights and found the place very good. The owner is the most lovely women ever and the breakfast was good. The location is perfect for those who wants to be far from the other houses and the view is lovely. We had a nice time there.

The house is in a quiet spot about 5 mins walk from the centre. We had great views across the gardens and fells from our window. The room was a decent size for the two of us. There is plenty of private off-road parking space here (parking can be an issue in the town centre). The breakfast was so generous that I had to ask for a reduced portion after the first morning. Jayne was happy to provide a veggie breakfast for my partner.

My friend and I had such a wonderful stay at Hillside House, we would definitely like to stay there again. We came up to the Peak District to get away from the city for a bit, and found Castleton a perfect location to explore the peaks from. Hillside House is situated just up the road from Castleton high street, with a beautiful view of the hills. I only with it were more sunny when we went, so we could have sat outside on the cute terrace. There's a lovely sun room though, so even if the weather is miserable, it's still nice to sit there with a good book and just enjoy nature. Thanks so much for your hospitality Jayne!

We chose the second story room with a big window overlooking the garden and valley, with the hills beyond. Best view we had in England from a B and B. The bedroom was perfect for two people, with a comfortable queen size bed, small cupboard to hang up our clothes, a tea/coffee tray, two chairs to relax in and an en-suite bathroom with shower and heated towel racks. Wish we had those in the U.S.! Our landlady, Jayne and her mother were wonderful and friendly. We treated ourselves to Jayne's delicious full English breakfast on two mornings which kept us going until late afternoon. If we wanted lighter fare we were provided a variety of fruit, cereal, eggs, bacon and toast combinations to choose from. Since this is a walking area, Jayne had lots of books with nearby walking paths for us to browse through.

Hilllside House is just a five minute walk to a variety of pubs, tearooms and footpaths so we only used the car once during the week we were there. Coming from California that was a treat.
