“Over Night Stop”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

Stopped here 3-4 years a go and as I needed to be in the area I decided to stop again. Arrived in foul weather and staff were very friendly. Quickly checked into my room in the main building. Room was very spacious and clean. Nice decoration and good size bathroom with great heating. I must admit the positioning of the mirror for shaving was excellent and worked well with the lighting. Evening meal of venison sausage and mash was excellent with a real wood fire keeping me warm. Wifi in the room was great and a quiet rural area gave a very good nights sleep. Breakfast again was very good and I will be stopping again if nearby.

we attended a family wedding. Our room was on the ground floor in the main building. It was very large with a wet room. The bed was lovely and comfy with top quality bedding. we had a nice seating area with comfy arm chairs. It had everything you could need from a top class venue. Just one problem. although there was a notice saying that the room was at the end of the water system we thought that 30 minutes was rather a long time to wait for the shower to run hot.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. I am sorry you had such an unusual wait for water. With the installation of our new biomass system, everything should be much more efficient. So glad that you enjoyed the wedding!

Stayed here for two nights when attending a Trade Show Castle Donington Race Circuit, so we chose the Hotel for it's excellent location and the fact that it would allow our small terrier to stay with us. The first room we were offered (#1) was very dark and gloomy, on the front of the Hotel so was quite noisy with the road just outside and the ensuite was tiny and very poor in construction, it had only a shower when we were expecting a bath & shower, so we requested a better room even offering to pay a bit extra if necessary. But the very helpful guy on reception said that wouldn't be necessary and offered us room 12 for the same cost. It was up a spiral staircase which may not suit everyone, but was located in an annexe at the rear of the Hotel so had no road noise and was much better in size and although it only had small windows it did seem brighter and not at all gloomy. The ensuite was large with a bath & shower over, however all the taps were loose on the basin & bath so took two hands to turn them on & off, the towel rail was only just about hanging onto the wall and the wooden toilet seat was split and loose! We reported all these issues when we checked out so hopefully they will have been addressed before anyone else stays in room 12! The shower over the bath looked a bit pathetic but was actually excellent with really good water flow/pressure, just shows you should never judge a book by its cover!

The bed was quite comfy and bedding was lovely, housekeeping adequate but attention needs to be paid to under & behind the bed & bedside tables, didn't look to have seen a hoover in sometime!

On the upside the breakfast was great, good choice of fruit, cereals & juices, good cooked options even offering kippers and smoked venison alongside all the usual options. The staff were friendly & helpful and breakfast was well cooked, tasty and piping hot. Our only disappointment was the quality of the toast which seemed to be a made from some mass produced type bread and was a little soggy having been served in a pile in a basket, but since we usually only eat homemade bread & toast it could just be us!

The evening fare is fairly basic & some of the quite short menu was unavailable, we like to see a short menu since it usually shows less use of ready made goods, but if items are missing then the choice does get cut somewhat! We were also disappointed not to have the Hotel's own Venison on the menu on the first evening, something we mentioned to the Proprietor when we spoke to him. However the second evening there were Venison Filo parcels on the specials so perhaps he took our comment on board, they were very tasty if a little unusual use of Venison. All in all the food was flavoursome and hot (where relevant) if not terribly imaginative, but we understood that their Chef had recently left so perhaps we caught them at a bad time.

Pleasant looking restaurant area, we sat in the Bar since we had our dog with us, which was adequate but not terribly large, a few comfy seats would have been a nice touch. Good choice of beers, spirits and reasonably priced quality wines.

We had a goodish deal at £80 per room per night B&B for two plus £10 per night for our dog, but I would not pay any more to stay here since the rooms are not of a high enough quality to achieve a higher price. It is obvious talking to the Proprietor and looking at the set up that their main focus is on functions and accommodating guests from these functions, so perhaps not the best place to stay for a holiday. But it is a good location for the Race circuit, airport and there are some lovely villages & Attractions to visit, with good walking in the area & the National Forest nearby, so it is a shame they are not more focused on the Hotel side.

One other note is that there is quite a lot of aeroplane noise, something we were aware of before booking, knowing the location of the airport, but it is not mentioned on the website and you should consider before booking since the planes fly most of the night! We got used to it and it is not as bad as noise from a busy road since it is not constant.

All in all ok but not setting the world on fire! Needs more attention to detail and guest comfort.

Room Tip: Don't have a front facing room, ask for annexe or try upstairs ones

We attended a friends wedding here and it was just lovely. I had a vision in my head about the venue from what people told me but I was pleasantly surprised once I arrived.
A nice little bar area, and to the right was the large room where ceremony was held and evening dancing. They called the guests through for the wedding breakfast to the "pigsty" and it was in fact a renovated pigsty, brilliant idea. The food was really nice and tasty, but more vegetables would have been nice as one large bowl for a table of ten didn't quite stretch. The food service was good, they were very quick, efficient and helpful. A hog roast was served in the evening and was also really nice.
There is Large outside area for guests to mingle, kids to play and our friend had a large bouncy castle and games.
We did not stay in the hotel over night or camp like some of the guests so I'm unable to comment.
I was informed that there was a bridal tent with everything a Bride and Groom should want, including a proper bed.
My only criticism of the venue is that the odd member of bar staff was a little off hand, I wanted to be able to taste my vodka and coke, but it was drowned with coke. I asked for a new drink but got a funny look, a new drink and my change chucked in to my hand whilst moving on to the next customer. Would definitely recommend.

Twenty family and friends stayed at the hotel for a wedding; so we saw many rooms- all were large, very clean and different from each other which made them interesting. The staff were helpful and caring. A small example- one slightly older aunt booked slightly later by telephone and asked for a room away from the wedding disco. When she arrived her room had a wonderful view of the countryside and lots of quiet.

Not part of the hotel review but to note that the wedding venue, food and again particularly the staff were the tops. A day to remember for all the good reasons!

Had to write this after reading the review 2 below. I'm currently on the camp site after spending the weekend here for the Off the Tracks music & beer festival.
The showers and loos on the campsite are good and there were enough of them even this weekend with probably 2000 people here. I checked into the site (also at the hotel reception) on Thursday night and was given all information there, including about shower tokens. The walk there from the campsite entrance is 3 minutes. It's a shame the below review is so scathing when the site is so pleasant and clearly a lot of work goes in to keeping it that way.
We've had an excellent weekend at the festival, attending for the first time, and intend to come back next time. Off the Tracks has been great for the kids and the line up this weekend was not to be missed. The festival clearly wouldn't work without the beautiful venue of Park Farm and I look forward to returning to them both next year.

We attended a relatives wedding here last weekend and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. The venue was unique, food lovely and the service excellent.

Our room was located away from the main function area and was recently refurbished, however other members of the family had rooms which have not yet been done so the bathrooms are a little old and tired.

Breakfast the following day was also good with friendly attentive staff.

The only negative was the unwelcoming gentleman behind the bar reading his paper and drinking his tea on our initial arrival otherwise everyone else was lovely.

Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed the wedding here in our barns and that you were happy with your bedroom.

We have an ongoing refurbishment plan in the bedrooms. They are all individually decorated , and are redesigned on a rolling basis, just one at a time.

I believe the gentleman you came across on your arrival was a repair man working in the bar area, we always make them cups of tea! I am so glad that you found the hotel staff to be lovely and we look forward to welcoming you again.
