“Lovely Carvery”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

We went here with friends who live close by and were pleasantly surprised at how nice and fresh tasting the carvery was. A really good selection of meats and the vegetables were very tasty. Would definitely go again of back in the area.

We stayed on the 26th and 27th July 2013. We were warned it could be lively on the Friday so we were prepared for a late night. Although full of youngsters they were all very friendly.
The food was excellent and so much so that we did not have breakfast as we were still full from the night before.
On the Saturday night it was very busy but once again the food was excellent.
During the evening the sky opened and it poured with rain. Unfortunately the roof drainage could not cope and water leaked through the ceilings of the upstairs landing and then the down stairs.
The landlord and staff did what they could putting containers under all the leaks.
We felt sorry for the overwhelming situation they were in and helped empty the containers which were filling quite quickly.
We were given free drinks and an offer of a free meal and wine should we return. Unfortunately as we were touring, our return journey did not allow a return.
Despite the leaking roof we would not hesitate to return. Reasonably priced, friendly and good food.
It is not the Ritz but it is not Ritz prices.

This is the worst place I have stayed in! Stayed for a couple of nights and ordered food but with great regret the only edible food was the chips! The food was ghastly! Very noisy as it is on a main road. While we were there, they had a bit of a flood and water must have come through the roof and pored down the walls and ceiling and they had no consideration for the guests as they kept coming upstairs and talking at the top of their voices 2 o'clock in the morning! Definetly would not recommend this establishment!!

By far the worst food I've eaten in Castle Donington and it's pricey too. Service was extremely slow (even though the restaurant was mostly empty). Half our table had to send their food back because it was stone cold on arrival. Haven't stayed overnight, but if the restaurant is anything to go by I feel sorry for those that have.

Stopped here for lunch on a day out. Both ordered lasagne. Everything on the plate was obviously home cooked - you can just tell by the shapes and how they look. The lasagne was great, with home cut and cooked chips, salad, carrots and home made garlic bread. The price was so reasonable for what we got and we've already told friends about it. Paid alot more the next day at one of those 'chains' and the food wasn't a patch on this.

Went Saturday 4th May in a party of 4, we had pre booked a table. On arrival told to find a table and that there would be a 40 minute wait for food. Not the best start but happy to make the most of it as out for a nice night. It took 20 minutes for drinks order and menus and a further 10 minutes for them to arrive. After a further 25 minutes the waitress came back to take the order, all four of us either wanted 12oz sirloin or dish containing it only to be told no 12oz sirloin or gammon- pretty big parts of the menu.
3 of us decided to have 16oz tbone and 1 mushroom stroganoff. Waited a considerably long time for some extremely poor food to be served- my steak that I had asked to be cooked medium well was rare and and had to be sent back, the accompaniments luke warm and the same sent back steak still not cooked to requirement but didn't say further as was spoiling the night. Had to ask on 2 occasions for a steak knife. Had to ask twice for more drinks. All food poor, steak had more fat than I have ever seen on a t bone, full of sinue, tough to cut through and harder to chew, tasteless. Not asked once how our meal was throughout. In clearing our plates commented to the waitress that the food was dissappointing, she said she would inform the manager.
On spending the amount we did would have expected the manager to come over and a reduction in the bill. Immediately the waitress was back with the bill, at full price. We paid and left, the whole experience was appalling and the restaurant wasn't busy (unsurprisingly). Would not recommend and appalled by the management.

Having moved to the area recently we have tried many pubs and restaurants but as far as value for money and quality of the food this is second to none. We had the Sunday carvery and all of the vegetables were fresh, seasoned and cooked to perfection , along with ample portions of the meat all of which was served on a large plate, lovely atmosphere and polite staff . Forget the big chains with all that noise and sometimes bland food we would not go any where else for our Sunday lunch,! Except mums of course!!
