“Waltzing Weasel Inn is a Great Place to Stay!!!”
Reviewed July 13, 2009

I stayed at the Waltzing Weasel Inn, Birch Vale with three friends in July 2009 on a special weekend break that included DB&B. The main attraction was the location and our plan was to do some hill walking in the surrounding countryside.
After reading some of the previous reviews I was rather apprehensive about the Waltzing Weasel, but this was totally unfounded. All four of us are experienced travellers and we found the Waltzing Weasel absolutely brilliant. The owner John was a great host and the barman Steve was very friendly and helpful. All the staff were very professional and efficient; it’s a pity that not all places are run as well as this one.
I stayed in room 7, which was a large double, old fashioned but clean and functional. Tea & coffee facilities were provided and a large ensuite bathroom with bath & shower over the bath. Plenty of clean white towels and lashing of hot water at all times. My friends stopped in room 8, which was a large family room with a double and full sized single bed and room 3 which was a small single. All were ensuite, clean and functional.
On the Friday night there was a special Spanish night with fantastic Spanish food and wine. Food was very tasty and well cooked and the service was swift and friendly. All the bedrooms were quite at night, but there was a bit of road noise from room 3, which is at the front of the inn.
Both breakfasts were great, plenty of choice and all the food was cooked perfectly and served quickly and efficiently.
Saturday night meal was from a large menu and again everything was cooked to perfection and served efficiently.
The Waltzing Weasel is the perfect location for exploring the High Peaks and you can do many walks straight from the inn as there are many local footpaths nearby. Luckily for us despite the bad weather forecast, we had a rain free weekend and enjoyed perfect walking conditions.
The food was so good at the WW we returned there for Sunday Lunch and were not disappointed, again a great meal.
So well done to John and his team and good luck for the future, we would certainly return to the Waltzing Weasel Inn. A Great Weekend!!!

I stayed recently with my partner for two nights on a 'credit crunch' deal which was £88 for a double room with three course dinner, bed and breakfast. When we arrived they couldn't find our booking and when they did our room was double booked so we got a free upgrade to Room 6. This was a nice room which felt like a suite and looked out onto lovely countryside. The food was a bit hit and miss. Many options were a bit over the top or unnecessarily unusual (I would rather have had a normal beefburger than an ostrich burger). I also wouldn't wish to pay full price for the food. The staff were friendly and overall it was great value for a weekend in the Peaks with a good location.

We found this hotel on the internet and looked forward to staying in a traditionally English Inn for a treat but we were very disappointed to find that the hotel bore no resemblance to the website at all. We arrived to find broken down vehicles in the car park, the bar looked old and tired with dirty dishes uncollected from tables in the bar area. The bedroom was exceptionally ordinary with the bath panel missing exposing pipes and spider webs. No towels were hanging in the bathrooms, the whole place was very un-inviting. Having seen the room we decided not to stay and walked out - I would not waste your time visiting this hotel.

Very pleasant bedroom warm and comfortable. The evening meal was very good and value for money. The beer was excellent, real ale , and perfectly served.
Breakfast was also very good with a varied menu choice, even a sausage for our dog!
The chef was very personable and friendly, but a special mention for the young girl behind the bar who looked after us very well even asking if our dog would like a bowl of water, very thoughtful. allin all we enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. Excellent value for money

New year 2008/9
Booked late but the place looked ideal, great location in High Peak, reasonable price for accomodation and food, good menu, vocalist and fireworks

Good Points: vocalist Emily Jones was brilliant (i'm afraid such a great voice slightly wasted in the venue), quantity of food, area was lovely, pitcure postcard scenary. Dogs welcome. price was reasonable

Not so good points:

we expected such a great place to be buzzing at new year. As it was we counted 13 diners (1 of whom lives there), no music playing until the vocalist at 11. all very quiet and no atmosphere.

The property was ideal with bar and small restaurant but was cluttered both with rubbish in the car park and inside, old english charm had turned into a cluttered mess. Generally a good clear out and freshen up is required.

Food: we are not food critics but we could tell much was not freshly made (loads of pre pack boxes could be seen all around). The food was not unpleasant but tthe menu was fussy, the numerous staff (almost half the number of diners) confused by the menu, and all a bit over the top.Lots of it and the some (the sorbet) was great but generaly fairly average

Bad points: the 'resident' who sits in the corner voicing is eloquent but scathing opinions very loudly all day and night.

Generally the place could be great but needs freshening in every way, although the host did try his best to be very hospitable. RAMSEY WOULD HAVE A FIELD DAY

PS: fireworks....health and safety...who needs it!

The food is way too expencive i.e. "bangers N mash 9.50.
beer too is almost the same as nightclub prices.
the room was basic but clean, However the wardrobe was full of junk. as was the gardens & lobby.
In my opinion the place may have been "top notch" a few years ago but is now in need of a total re furb, i.e. wallpaper held up with masking tape. door handles falling off, wiring to bathroom lights looked "iffy" as the insulation is missing, toilet roll holder fell into pieces.
flagstones in rear area are moss covered / filthy & dangerously uneven due to the mortar having been long since weathered away. Old tables & chairs litter the outsides front / sides & rear along with old kitchen appliances & an old car that looks like it is being "done up"
The worst part of the weekend to us was the ruddiness & arrogance of the owner / cook. we asked are the sausages "plain" or spiced / cumberland etc. The waitress went to find out & announced on her return "he dont know" needless to say they were horrid cheap peppered sausages with obvious green specks in.
brown bread toast was plonked on the table I asked for white & was scowled at.
The owner wanted a debate about "piles of steaming dog [--] " over the breakfast table !!!!!!
enough said ?.

I decided to pay a bit more than usual as it promised good food and seemed very welcoming. It was nothing but a disappointment. The food, for which it apparently has won awards, was very average whilst remaining expensive. The drinks were warm and the dog they owned kept jumping up at the table when you were eating. At breakfast, most of the ingredients were missing. The rooms were also very average. The next evening we paid half the price at a lovely B & B with excellent food - just goes to show - you don't always get what you pay for!
