“Brilliant, especially the staff”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

The highlight of our stay at The Waltzing Weasel was the fantastic staff who just can't do enough for you. However this was closely followed by the gorgeous room and cosy bar area. The only disappointment was dinner, but breakfast was lovely, and when everything else was so amazing it didn't really matter.
Unfortunately our lovely host told us that the place was being taken over and he was having to look for another job and I'm sure the place will be a lot sadder for his departure. We wish him all the best!

Been to the Waltzing Weasel twice this Christmas for food. It was spot on! The quality and presentation are very high for a pub restaurant. I've paid more for far less of a meal. Lamb Shank & Steak pie was brilliant! Nothing to fault as per usual.
On another note, The Christmas Decorations are somthing else! It took a week to put them up and it shows. Exceptional floristry. We paid to see Tatton Park's decor, The decs in the Waltzing Weasel were far superior.
I noticed another review moaning about a cleaning/bleach smell. I thought the smell of cleanliness and care was critical. I did not notice anything when I entered except a coa/logl fire and a smiling member of staff. Very relaxed, Very Christmasy and a real treat. Thanks.

We arrived Friday evening and were really impressed, lovely pub, fab room, staff great but then it all went wrong! We woke on Saturday morning to no hot water, British gas strike again We had to push every step of the way, the cleaners tried their best but as the owner was not on site they could do very little. The owner, Lynn, did not bother to tell us she had arrived or make any attempt to keep us informed. With a lot of pushing, from 8am to about 10am, we eventually got her to let us go to their sister pub for a shower, the fact that their was no hairdrier which meant I had to drive back in the freezing cold with wet hair, no fun at all. Lynn did say there would be no charge for our nights stay other than for our food on Friday evening. Great. Our friends arrived and off we went for a walk, 7 miles later we arrived back, no Lynn but a very nice getleman behind the bar. There was still NO hot water and she had not even bothered to contact us to keep us informed. The guy behind the bar really did not know what to do with us. We stated more than once that we would be happy to stay as long as we would have hot water in the morning. The nice guy said he could not promise this as British gas had been out and needed to find a part. He advised, almost insisted, that we find alternative accommodation, he even found it for us. He promised that for all our inconvenience there would be no charge for Saturday night and that they would pay for our alternative accomodation. Off we went, not such a nice place but lovely people. During the evening we had a call from the Waltzing Weasel informing us that things had now changed and we would have to pay all for our accommodation. My husband spoke to Lynn, who was most rude and then to Mr nice guy who once again agreed to pay our bill but, owner lady snatched the phone from him and shouted 'No chance'. We paid our own bill. Had the owner kept us informed and had a different attitude I would be writing a very different review, however this woman has no idea about customer relations and it is no wonder the car park and pub were almost empty. a very unpleasant experience. We will never go again or recommend it to anyone. Sorry staff you tried your best but your boss let you down. Please read Mixed Feelings review as it confirms everything about the owner. In this day of recession customers want to be treated fairly and with dignity, but being treated like this will make me spend my money elsewhere. We recognise that the lack of water was not the fault of the Weasel but that was not the problem, it was the attitude and lack of attention from the owner who was not willing to support a decision made by her staff in her absence and then conveyed that in a rude manner.

I had been trying to find somewhere for a weekend away to celebrate my wife's birthday. So many hotels look the same, don't they?
It was the name that attracted me to the Waltzing Weasel. I knew she would be struck by it.
Getting there was probably the most difficult bit. It really is off the beaten track, at the North end of the Peak district. But by a combination of Google and good luck we managed to find it. From the outside it didn't look particularly inspiring but then it was November and the weather was overcast and gloomy. In the summer the gardens with their wonderful view of the hills would be a great place for a relaxing drink.
The bar/restaurant is not large but the eclectic mix of furniture gave it a character all of its own.
The place had a few marks and scratches it had picked up throughout an obviously busy year but there was nothing really to complain about. The rooms were clean and reasonably well furnished.
We had dinner there for both nights of our stay. The food was first class; I had rib eye steak and lamb cottage pie while my wife had sea bass and comfit of duck. The service was very attentive and friendly. We ended up chatting to the owners about the place and it's interesting history. Apparently the actor Arthur Lowe lived locally and was a regular.
Breakfast too was of a high standard.
We hadn't been to the Peak District before but we were pleased with what we found. Bakewell wasn't far and proved to be a lovely place to visit. There is a large farmers market on Saturdays which is definitely worth a visit. Castleton was also near by with caves and old mines to explore.
The only problem is the maze of minor roads. You'll need a good satnav or map to keep you on track. We got lost many times. But we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I'm glad we went for somewhere that little bit different.

Room Tip: Give yourself plenty of time travelling. You can easily get lost!

We have just returned from a one night stay at the Waltzing Weasel, chosen to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. The place holds special memories for us, as this is where we spent our wedding night.
On arrival, we were met by Steve, the bar manager, who is a lovely chap and who made us feel very welcome. He showed us to Room 5, which is a large room with a four-poster bed and great views towards Kinder Scout. It is beautifully furnished and extremely comfortable. So far, so good.
We had a couple of drinks in the bar before changing for dinner, which was booked for 8.30 in the restaurant. We were shown to our table on time but then waited 10 minutes for menus, and a further 30 minutes for our starters. The food was lovely, so we were not too concerned at this point, although decidedly hungry.
I ordered the "Cider braised and pressed pork belly, with cheddar and onion mash [sic] potatoes, charred apples and
cider jus" (description cut & pasted from the pub web-site). The pork was undercooked and tough and what should have been crackling was a revolting lump of cold fat. I sent the dish back and was offered a replacement or "a sandwich", but by this time, I had lost my appetite. My husband had ordered the lamb shank, which was dry but just about OK. He did not enjoy it, because the evening had been spoiled by the awful meal I was given and the general lack of service in the restaurant. The waiter said that "Chef is very sorry", but Chef did not arrive to deliver that apology himself.
I raised the issue with the landlady/owner (without raising my voice), who agreed to take the cost of my main meal off the bill. She was, however, completely unsympathetic about how it had ruined what should have been a very special evening for us. When I tried to explain why we had chosen to stay there for our 10th anniversary, the landlord/owner said "well don't come back when it is 20 years".
To add insult to injury, we were also approached by a woman who came and sat at our table (introducing herself as some sort of marketing manager (?), employed by the pub) who then lectured us on the wrongs of leaving a restaurant without paying for the food. She also suggested that we should discuss the issue "in the morning, when you haven't had a drink". How insulting to a couple in their late 50s.
Breakfast this morning was absolutely excellent, with the exception of the orange juice. At £80 per night, I expect better quality OJ.
When we checked out I dealt with the landlady/owner expecting to discuss the bill, but she had already adjusted it. She had removed the cost of my starter and main course, and a bottle of wine from our bill. No apology from her, so why she had to be so difficult the night before, I do not understand.
So - very mixed feelings. The Waltzing Weasel is a really lovely place to stay, a great combination of cosy pub and classy accomodation. The downside? Work it out.....
Rating this place is really difficult - the staff are lovely, but the owners showed no commitment whatsoever to customer satisfaction. Would we recommend it ? Probably, but let us hope that our experience was a one-off.

Room Tip: Room 6 - our wedding night room. Amazing. Room 5 - our 10th anniversary room - next door to room 6...

We recently held the party for my sons christening here and I cannot fault this lovely country pub one bit, we had approx 150 guests in our party and the food served to us (buffet style) was absolutley fantastic, not the normal sandwich selection but rather hot options, home made pies, unusual salads etc we are still recieving feedback from our guests on how nice the food was.
We all arrived at pretty much the same time but the time queuing for drinks was short, the staff were attentive, polite, proffesional and even offered when the car park filled (we had a lot of cars) to taxi people down the road to alternative parking so guests didn't have to walk!!
We've eaten here previously off the normal menu and always found the food excellent and good value for money.
Thank you to all the staff that helped make our sons day so special!
Very highly recommended

We stayed for 1 night in the four poster bed room. Very comfortable bed-pity there was only one chair! Why is it you have to sit on the bed to watch the TV - or are we weird? Excellent evening meal, which we had booked for the restaurant, not knowing the place, but were advised by the very helpful member of staff when we checked in, that as we were the only ones, we might find eating in the bar area nicer, which we did! Breakfast good, spoilt by only orange juice and plastic marmalade! Please, all you hoteliers and B & B owners, open a jar and put some in a dish for once - we might even think it is home made and praise you for it! Overall, would recommend
