We stayed at the Makeney as part of a Groupon offer. We opted for two nights and having been very disappointed with the last hotel we visited under this scheme, we were very wary about what to expect.
However, we were very happy with what we got. Yes, like others have said, the service at reception was slow at times and the lift was out of order (not an issue for us, but appreciate others could have some major problems) and the times to have your meals was quite restrictive - in 30 minute increments, so later arrivals would only get later slots, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The evening meal was lovely and worth going back to; breakfast was usual hot buffet fayre and continental options with nothing too special.
Staff were helpful and friendly and we had a really quiet, relaxing time - just what we went for, in lovely surroundings. We had wifi access if needed and bath towels were nice a big!
On the negative side, there appeared to be a very "damp" smell as you left the reception to go to the bedrooms, which was very unpleasant and we could hear next doors telly very clearly (and it was on most of the time). However, the downstairs lounge was wood panelled and traditional in its appearance
One question though: is it a Four or Three star establishment (as both were shown in different places!)
If its Three - it was really good
If its Four - maybe room for improvement
But on the whole pretty good value with a Groupon Offer - could be a tad overpriced without!

My daughter and I stayed 2 nights in twin room. Lovely and spacious. Waited 10 minutes in reception before a member of staff arrived to check us in. Not a good start. Booked dinner for 7pm as we had a 2 year old with us. Sat down at 7 but no food until after 8 by which time my grand daughter was getting tired and fractious so no dessert. Serious lack of staff and housekeeping poor. First breakfast very nice but this morning a lot more guests and staff could not cope. No cereal bowls, sparse buffer, juice and milk jugs empty. Pleasant visit but sadly will not return.

We were on the top floor. The room was enormous and very good. However, the lift was out of action (waiting for parts) which meant a 40 steps up and back again and being in our 70's was no joke. The evening meal was very good, served in the conservatory on the first night. Going along on night 2 for our meal found the conservatory closed and made up for a wedding the following afternoon. No information was given in any form as to the change of location, which we had to find ourselves!
On leaving, to settle up we had a £20 voucher towards an evening meal had not been deducted and an addition item had been added that was not ours, so check your bill on leaving!

Stayed for 2 nights through Travelzoo on a deal which included bed, breakfast and evening meals on both nights. The hotel has nice grounds and if you are lucky you may get a room overlooking them. we didn't, we overlooked the car park but not an issue. Our bedroom was a good size but the decor was dated and the small bed very uncomfortable. The bathroom had an electric shower over the bath (no plug ) which was hot but had poor pressure. We found half used bottles of the hotels complimentary toiletries which had been left by the previous guest and not removed by the cleaner, Who wants to use somebody Else's leftovers ?
The building is old and showing signs of wear and tear but nothing that caused concern. The lift was out of order.
The staff we encountered were all very friendly, efficient and customer focused. The food both at breakfast and evening meals was excellent. Meals can be taken in the conservatory which is large and has good views of the surrounding countryside.
We very much enjoyed our stay and would return if a similar deal was available.

My husband has a heart condition and cannot walk up stairs. We asked for a room with a walk in shower because he cannot get in and out of a bath. All the rooms with walk in showers are upstairs and there is no lift working! We were put in a ground floor room in the courtyard, there was a disable sign on the door, so we thought perhaps things would be alright in there, but no, there was only a bath! How are disabled people expected to get in and out of a bath? I am able bodied but I would have struggled to get in and out of this small bath, so we had to make do with a strip wash! Not very appropriate! My husband had a bad fall on the first evening and was very unwell the next day, so we didn't stay for the second night. The room was so dark and dingy...no natural light in there! The only good thing I can say about this hotel, is that the food was very nice when we had dinner. The breakfast buffet was hopeless, I spent a long time waiting for hot and cold food to be replenished, there were no cereal bowls, no milk, no butter and I got the dregs of the orange juice. Not a bit organised. I won't be recommending this hotel. Very disappointing!

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel if you're disabled!

Booked an overnight stay as a 'treat' for myself and my daughter, found it reasonably easily road signs could be improved though. Room was very nice but the place lacked character and the restaurant was very disappointing! Grounds need quite a bit of maintenance but could be really nice and provide more outdoors if someone took the trouble to do this.
Food was really poor and restaurant as a whole was poorly staffed. Conservatory needs refurbishing or at least replace the blinds that are really stained and grubby looking.
The staff were pleasant on the whole but a lack of them!

Room Tip: We were facing the car park but it wasn't noisy can't comment on any other rooms. Pub up the...
