“Good Sunday carvery”
Reviewed July 21, 2013 via mobile

We stopped off here for Sunday lunch with the kids. Good carvery with choice of meats, good selection of vegetables (carrots, swede, cauliflower cheese, peas, cabbage, Brussels), choice of potatoes (boiled, mash, roast) plus stuffing, sausage, Yorkshire pudding and gravy/sauces. Good value at 11 pound per adult, 6pound per child. They were busy but we managed to get a table fine. They seemed to be dog friendly, and have a good bar selection. Would certainly go again.

“Cracking little pub in a quiet location”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Thought we'd call in for a spot of Sunday lunch to find an excellent menu as well as a carvery option (carvery on Sundays only), deep fried camembert, pate and deep fried mushrooms was our 3 starters, all tastefully presented and very nice, we all opted for the carvery (£10.95) and was pleasantly surprised to have the chef explain the choices on offer - 3 joints of beef cooked rare, medium well or well done, 2 lamb 1 slightly pink 1 well cooked, turkey or pork and you could have more than one meat choice!!!!! Then simply help yourself to Yorkshire pudding/s, roast, mashed or new potatoes, carrots, cabbage, peas, broccoli, swede, cauliflower cheese, then gravy and accompaniments - WOW what a great tasting Sunday lunch and well worth every penny. We WILL be returning with other family members very soon.

“Authentic pub in country location”

Food is excellent and not too expensive, to be on the safe side booking in advance is recommended to be sure of a table

“good beer AND good food!”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

lost in the hills but quite close to Derby its really unusual to find a pub /country hotel that gets both right! We stayed recently in one of small cottages at the end of the car park -warm cosy and clean but as it was still winter weatherb we didn't venture off site.Ideal for lovers who want a cosy quiet place and a full stomach , a historic "atmosphere" pub but showers that work!
Definitely on the visit again list

“2 night stay July 6 7 2013”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

Booked in for 2 nights during glorious summer heatwave. Wonderful views with attractive garden over looking fields being harvested. Room priced at £95 then £65 for no apparent reason. It wasn't full so wondered if we;d been fobbed off? Very comfortable bedroom, wide screen TV, shower adequate. Clean towels each day. Approch to bedroom pretty scuffy: carpet tatty, hand-railings sticky. Congenial staff but cleanliness patchy. Breakfast was basic, coffee (strong instant awful). Evening meals erratic, big helpings but vegetables (with the exception of swede on Sunday night) were re-heated and tasteless. Well meaning staff but the place clearly lacks a hands-on manager. A main in The Good Pub Guide should be reveiwed. .
