“Poor slow service, over-priced - peas with everything!”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

We went to The Rising Sun Hotel as it was very close to where we were staying on a walking weekend. We were a group pf 10 and had booked in advance.

It didn't start well when the only ale they had was served so cold that it was tasteless and the barmaid was unable to explain why it was being served so cold. We sat at the table and ordered our meals. The descriptions of the meals were extensive and we waited in anticipation for our starters. We waited and waited and waited. The bar staff had disappeared so could not ask about the delay. Starters arrived and OK.

Waited and waited and waited for main course. It was probably approaching 90 minutes after ordering when they arrived. I had ordered Braised Beef Plate pie. It was mince (a small amount) in a lot of dry pastry. And came with peas! In fact every meal came with peas, small hard and dry.The fish was declared to be OK but all the rest of the meals were barely adequate.

We made a few comments about 'peas with everything' to the waitress and then the 'manager' arrived to confront the group over the comments. She said they had lots of different vegetables on offer and that all the locals knew that! We only had to ask. - we are not local.

The prices suggest top quality food. This was not. Service was poor and the attitude of the 'manager' when we dared to comment was unbelievable. It is no wonder the place was empty on a weekend evening.

“Good value carvery”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

We visited the carvers here one Sunday whilst staying nearby on recommendation of b&b owner.
It was very good value and we loved the surrounding area, garden etc. Nice range of beers also. Would go again.

“A lesson in how NOT to run a restaurant”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

We arrived, 6 of us, in the early evening to a friendly welcome. The place was almost empty. We sat in the garden and the waitress brought menus. Some of them were for 'lunchtime' and the rest were for 'unchtime'!

When we were ordering, it turned out that the 'lunchtime' menus were only for Sundays. Once that was sorted out, we ordered. Three of us ordered steaks. Two of them were to be 'with sauce separately' and the other was to be 'rare'. This was read back to us.

By now it was getting chilly so we went inside and sat at a beautifully laid table. We were given two loaves of warm bread with butter - very tasty. We ate them and waited. And waited. And waited. The place was still almost empty; I can't imagine how long the wait would have been if they were busy.

One of our group went to get more drinks at the bar as there was no sign of any staff near the table. He stood being ignored and, after nearly 15 minutes, he gave up and came back. It STILL wasn't busy.

Eventually the food arrived. The two steaks were covered in sauce. When we pointed this out and the friendliness from the waitress disappeared. She went away to the kitchen and said, "the steaks are cooked in the sauce". I think that's impossible. She then said the chef would come over and explain. He/she never did so. The two people were by then so hungry that they left us and went home to eat.

The 'rare' steak was very well done; but we had got the message by then; don't bother saying anything.

We remained polite throughout. Once we had paid and were leaving, I said, "thank you" to the waitress, as I always do. I got a "whatever" in reply.

The tragedy is that the other three meals were delicious! We won't be returning.
