A group of 21 of us booked a table at the Lighthouse for Saturday 8 June. We agreed the menu and wines in advance. Everything was beautifully laid out on our arrival (most importantly, the wine!) and we were all treated to a delicious "amuse bouche" before our selected dishes. The service throughout was friendly and efficient with the wonderful food being delivered promptly but unhurriedly to all.
It is not easy for a small restaurant to deal efficiently with such a large number of people but everything was executed superbly. The chef - a remarkably young, self-effacing and apparently sef-taught cook - was dragged from his kitchen at the end of the evening to a standing ovation from our party.
Altogether a splendid occasion.

Having heard many good things about the Lighthouse we decided to try it for ourselves. Hidden away behind a country pub it is a little out of the way and hard to find but it was a meal well worth the trek. The restaurant itself is very small and intimate and looks like it would be a lovely spot for a romantic meal out.
Upon arrival we were seated at our table by friendly staff and presented with the menu. There were about 6 options for starter and 6 for mains, a somewhat limited choice but it all looked delicious. I did notice that there wasn't much choice for vegetarians, not that that was a problem for us, but the manager seemed very accommodating and if any vegetarians were to visit i am sure he would oblige as best he could. After ordering we received some beautiful looking and tasting canapés and some warm bread. Then came the starters which were all lovely and very well presented. The mains were also delicious and very filling, to such an extent that we could not her persuaded to have a dessert. Despite this we were given some lovely chocolate covered strawberries which were very refreshing.
The Lighthouse was not just a lovely place to go and eat, it was also a very enjoyable experience. The additional 'add ons' made the meal seem a little more special somehow.
Thank you so much to the lovely staff who made the whole afternoon so enjoyable and were attentive to our every need.
I would really recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a beautiful evening out, i will most certainly be returning.

We had heard glowing reports of the Lighthouse from various friends, so thought we should come and give it a try to celebrate my Husband's birthday. I booked using their online reservation system, which worked very well. I got a friendly email reply very quickly and it was all dealt with very efficiently.

The restaurant itself is a new extension at the back of the Rose and Crown pub. Its newness lets it down very slightly because it is quite light and airy, meaning that when there aren't many other diners in then it can lack a little in atmosphere. However, one lovely feature is the open kitchen where it was lovely to see the small team going about their business with care and attention, and without fuss.

An amuse bouche of deep fried whitebait with harissa mayo was served while we looked at the menus. On thursdays and sundays you can eat from the set menu where 3 courses are £23.95. On Fridays and Saturdays it is the a la carte menu only. The menu is interesting and its nice to see some different things on there. There is certainly no where in the Ashbourne area to rival it in my opinion.

I had duck egg wrapped in hot smoked salmon which was all deepfried with a crispy breadcrumb coating. We were also given homemade olive brioche with our starters which were really delicious. We also had a palette cleaner of cherry sorbet. Main course was poussin wrapped in parma ham and small kievs of the leg made with wild garlic. Pudding was the rocky road which was very nice, but too chocolatey for me (and that's saying something) but my Husband was on hand to make sure nothing went to waste. He had fois gras to start, his main was sea bass with tomato risotto and then the deconstructed peanut butter cheesecake for dessert.

The quality of the food is very good, and the service was friendly and unhurried. If you stick to the set menu then it can be a good value meal out, but be careful of the options which incur a supplement. Quite a few dishes require a supplement to be paid (£3 on my husband's starter, £7.50 on the main that another in our party had). So if you happen to order these, and perhaps have a bottle of wine, it can very quickly increase the bill.

All in all, I am sure you won't be disappointed at the quality of food at the Lighthouse. And this could be a reasonable value place to eat, but watch the supplements if you're watching the pennies.

We will probably return to the Lighthouse, but only on a thursday or sunday for the set menu.

It was really difficult to choose from this varied & very local menu. I chose the duck egg wrapped in salmon & breadcrumbs & then deep fried. Delicious! Then I had the fillet steak which was cooked to perfection. The restaurant had a super friendly atmosphere & the staff were most attentive & helpful. I would recommend anyone to visit this gem in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside.

We visited the Lighthouse with friends who were particularly keen to check it out for themselves having read the recent Sunday Telegraph review and based on our recommendations from previous visits. Very impressive once again! We received a friendly welcome, great food and excellent service. The menu is a problem...what to choose when everything is so good? Also great that they thoughtfully provide "amuse bouche" and other tasty things before and after your meal.
