Had an excellent meal. Staff seemed friendly. Only let down sticky table and placemats. Overall good and would go again.

Was intending to have a meal in the bar but there was a man at the bar with his dog which he allowed to mooch for food at someones table so it put us off and we went through to the dining room. The dining room was lovely, the staff were really friendly and the food was excellent. Although all the tables were reserved, the staff found us one that we could have our meal at until the customers who booked the table turned up. We had more than enough time to eat. Prices were good as well. Would recommend to anyone to try a meal there.

We went to The Bowling Green Inn on Monday evening, on the off chance. there was no menu outside so we went to the bar area to see what food was on offer. After the barmaid looked at my 14 year old daughte rin a demeaning way she continued processing a bill payment for another customer. When she had finished she decided to ignore us. We were the only people at the bar! I asked if they had a menu. I was advised that there were no seats in the restaurant but we could sit in the bar, which we agreed was fine, we were then told they were very busy and it could be 1/2 and hour to 45 mins for food which was also ok, I was then told it would be an hour for food. We had still not seen the menu and I had the general impression we were not welcome. We declined the hour wait and went to the red chilli indian restaurant which was lovely.

I don't understand why this pub is ranked so highly. It is not bad, but it is not great, and definitely not better than at least one other restaurant in Ashbourne ranked below it. The best thing about our meal was the nachos, which we shared as a starter. But who can't serve up a decent plate of nachos. The two children with us didn't eat much of their dinner. One of them had requested a cheeseburger without cheese. It came with cheese. The burger meat wasn't great. One of the adults had to send their minute steak back. The other had a Cajun salmon salad. It was ok, but probably a little over done and too much seasoning.

Dropped in on the off chance of a table at 12.45pm today, Sunday. The dining room was fully booked but we were happy to eat in the very nice bar room. In fact, all the tables in here were taken up with people eating. The young lady behind the bar was very pleasant and helpful. The drinks were very good and the food was excellent! It was also very good value for money. We shared a whole baked camembert with bread to start, which was yummy and very filling! My husband had scampi, served with the chunkiest chips and mushy peas. (Garden peas were an option). Large portions of everything. I had Balmoral chicken which was a chicken fillet topped with haggis and a creamy pepper sauce, served with dauphinoise potatoes and veg. It was delicious! We were both too full for a pudding! Starter for two, two mains and four drinks, £35. Excellent and will definitely be calling more often. (the only reason I have given the atmosphere 4 stars and not 5 is because of the barking dog which belonged to another diner. I don't agree with dogs in eating areas and the owner should have removed his dog when it became a nuisance).
