I ate at this lovely pub last Sunday with my partner and his mother, whilst on a drive out to Derby. It is set in a beautiful, picturesque little village amidst gorgeous scenery. Upon entering we were greeted by a friendly, welcoming lady, who we took to be the landlady. Although, at first, we were the only people in the bar (it was only just mid-day), the atmosphere still felt relaxed and pleasant. The decor in the pub is bright and traditional, with tasteful wooden tables and chairs. We had read good things about the carvery and we were not disappointed. My partner and I chose the roast beef and, his mother, the pork. The meat was sliced thickly and a Yorkshire pudding and two golden roast potatoes were added before we were handed the piping hot plates upon which we could add whatever vegetables and gravy we liked. There were containers full of steaming creamy mashed potato, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage and sliced leeks covered in a delicious sauce. By the side of the carvery counter there was a huge pot containing bubbling hot gravy with dishes of apple sauce and horseradish alongside for you to help yourself. The meat was tender and full of flavour and the veg was cooked to perfection. Excellent!
Choosing a dessert was a real dilemma. There was a choice of perhaps five or six and each one sounded amazing. My partner chose a chocolate sponge, smothered in a hot chocolate sauce, which he said was fantastic. His mother decided to have the Bakewell Tart served with cream which she said was one of the best she had ever had. I was really stuck. I didn't know whether to have the Strawberry Stack, which sounded heavenly, or the plum sponge served with either cream or custard. Eventually, I plumped for the plum sponge and ate it with pouring cream. It was absolutely gorgeous. It was just the correct sweetness and the sponge was really light and buttery. The perfect way to round off a fantastic meal.
I would recommend this place to anyone for friendliness, excellent customer service, good atmosphere, brilliant food and, also, the price. We couldn't believe that such a scrumptious meal for three, with drinks, came to under fifty pounds. We shall definitely be returning.
