Recently called in at the Royal Oak after a visit to Alton Towers. My girlfriend and myself both had the fish and chips which were fantastic, we went into the bar after our meal and got chatting to a few of the locals which were really friendly and welcoming, especially a young chap called Niall, he was a laugh a minute and we would definitely return if only for a night out with him. Delicious food and great laughs.

I recently visited the royal oak after a trip to Alton Towers with friends. After dissapointingly finding out the theme park stop serving food early we were all famished.

We spotted the quaint building at the side of the road. We were greeted by the lovely beer garden and were over the moon to find out they served good old home cooked meals.

The banter was right on par with ours and we were laughing with in minutes. We ordered our food and all six meals turned up alot sooner than expected.

All six of us were extremely happy with our meals. They were all cooked to perfection. The portions were more than generous and superbly presented. I strongly recommend the belly pork served on mash and a lashing of gravy. A separate bowl of fresh veg and a separate bowl of coliflower cheese really take this meal above and beyond beautiful.

Dressed in our civvies with tattoo's on display and broad Yorkshire accents usually set alarm bells ringing. We were greeted and treated with great respect with was a pleasant supprise. The land lord had a cracking sense of humour and gave as good as he got with the wise cracks which we're on par with our humour.

Five stars and we are planing to return just to treat the ladies in our lives. A really positive experience.

P.S. you still need to let us know where the microwave is from. (private joke, don't be put off public readers)

the place is located in a quiet setting, pretty close to the river . nice photographs of the mayfield area showing its history.
coming to the food itself; it was brilliant - probably the best smoked salmon in long long time!
