“What a difference a year makes!”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

Just back from 6 nights at Callow Top. We returned this year as we loved it so much last year. Its a great location, good size pitches, lovely wildlife and very green.
All I can say is what a difference a year makes!
This year the toilet block and showers were dirty even after the cleaners had been in, most of the time they just seemed to change bin bags and move the wet floor sign to a different position. There was even "poo" on the tiles in the ladies which remained all week even after reporting it. We never smelt any cleaning products except just before we left in the tent field toilets, this was probably because they were about to close till the following weekend.
At least we had a great time together.

We've just returned back from a weekend stay at callowtop. We've stayed loads of times in the past but standards are starting to slip. Overall the site was clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

The showers and toilet blocks were quite dirty at times but my main criticism was the broken steps in the deep end of the swimming pool. The top step was missing and the bottom two were broken which meant the kids struggled to get out of the pool. My youngest son cut his tummy and leg when trying to climb out on the broken steps...not the standard we usually see at callowtop.

This is our second visit this year in our caravan. The first time with our grandaughter and this time on our own. Both times we really enjoyed ourselves. Great place as a base for exploring the area. Staff friendly and helpful and public areas clean. Beautiful setting. Dont know where the "Butlins" bit comes from. Have these people ever been there? And as for "too many rules" they are there for our protection. Keep up the good work Callow Top and see you next year.

good for families though we were dads and kids.
only 4 stars due to their rules about noise and deposit you have to pay, if youmake too much noise you dont get it back, though we were ok and are quite noisy
staff all very nice on booking in
facilities ok
easy walk into Ashbourne along the Tissington trail, great little town for pubs, fish and chips etc.

I read the recent reviews on here prior to my stay and I have to say the reviews nearly made me cancel my booking. However I'm glad I didn't as Callow Top is actually a really nice campsite/holiday park. I've camped on dozens of different sites in the UK and in France and this is definitely one of the better UK sites. It's very spacious particularly for campers like us which is rare as a lot of sites just have camping as an after thought. The toilets and showers were very clean and spacious and contrary to what people on here have said there is a toilet block at the top of field 5/6. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we had a fantastic Sunday lunch in the onsite pub. Now for the bad points.....Some of the people staying at the site were just awful. One couple in particular in our field (5) decided it was ok to have a blazing domestic at full volume so the who field (and probably campsite) could hear. Their language was guttural which was simply unforgivable considering the number of families and children camped in close proximity. Other groups thought it was Ok to play their music until 1am, despite being asked by a warden to keep the noise down at 11pm! Also some dirty, horrible, inconsiderate moron let their dog [--] on the corner of the camping field. Why not just pick it up like most dog owners? Fortunately a warden cleaned it up a few hours later.

So all in all I enjoyed camping on the site and I guess there will always be a risk of inconsiderate idiots no matter where you choose to stay.

Stayed here some 5 years ago and enjoyed it. Returned this year and it was terrible

+Great location for walking, biking abd sightseeing.
+ Food served from the cafe bar ok and served quickly

- Rude unhelpful jobs worth staff
- Dirty toilets
- Very noisy with no attempt by the site staff to keep the chavs in check
- Different information given to different guests or lack of information
- Dreadful entertainment even for the kids
- Expensive

Shame on you Callow Top. We will never return.

I better confess straight away that I don't like camping and was only dragged here under sufferance so if you are one of those curious people (in my opinion of course) who enjoy sitting in a field feeling cold, having to get up in the middle of the night and trudge over wet ground for a pee or listening to other camper's music then this review isn't for you. If you are a reluctant or occasional camper it might be relevant.

Firstly, the setting is lovely, on top of a hill as the name suggests, close to the Georgian market town of Ashbourne. The field we stopped in (number 4) was also very nice and close to the amenities. Other fields are much further away however. The site, including the toilets, was very clean and well-kept when we were there and the staff very helpful and friendly. They all seemed to be very young and I don't know if they are hired on the cheap? The heated pool was warm and a big attraction, although not over large.

Unfortunately, there are also quite a few negatives. I thought it was pricey for what you got. There are notices and rules plastered everywhere and it felt a bit like Colditz - not that anyone seemed to enforce the rules. The site had a bit of a 'chavvy' feel to it. We saw a youth urinating into a hedge and some people seem to take great delight in sharing their choice of music with a wider public. I am not at all a snob and come from a working class background but there are limits.

Would I go back - no, but then I swore never to go camping again! I am sure, however, that there are nicer and cheaper sites in the White Peak area for you to investigate and I would recommend that you shop around.

Room Tip: If camping, field 4 is your best choice.
