“A unique dining experience”
Reviewed February 17, 2014

We both had a really nice time on Valentines night, this being only the second time we've visited The Dining Room since moving to the Dales.

Eight courses of lovingly prepared food, subtle flavours and all perfectly cooked with emaculate attention to detail. Excellent service by the staff, prepared to go the extra mile to make sure our dining experience went smoothly. During the meal I asked if I could have a non-alcoholic 'mock-tail' as I was driving, and although cocktails aren't strictly served, the bar manager went out of her way to prepare me something.

Only one thing I would say though, to be taken as constructive feedback is to respectfully ask Peter, Chef proprietor, to please re-think The Dining Room's position on serving foie gras. It's a cruel and inhumane practice by which birds are force fed grain. I’m not sure too many people realise how inhumane the practice is and don’t realise or care what they’re consuming?

I however pre-requested no foie gras on my plate, which was not a problem for them and was served a fish dish instead. The only slight disappointment was that fois gras accompanied the duck, a dish I’m really partial to.

Being really picky here also, but as it was Valentines night, it would have been a nice touch if they'd prepositioned the table of two's into diamond shapes, allowing couples to sit next to each other rather than face to face. A few candles would have added to the romance and ambience as well.

That said though, we very much look forward to our next visit!

“Something a Little Different”
Reviewed February 10, 2014

Our friends took us here as a birthday treat and so had no idea where the taxi was taking us... They had been before and so were pretty excited. On arrival we entered a small but perfectly formed dining room that had a very nicely presented chic interior with traces of the buildings heritage. There was no menu as such - only the evenings selections of chefs designed tasting menu of many many courses. Upon arrival we shown our table (there are perhaps 8 -10 tables at most) which was superbly presented with white table linen and gleaming glasswear. Cutlery was stowed in a funky block type thing which was an indication of the evenings' quirkiness we were to expect. There were way too many dishes to remember and as I am told this selection changes often, to reflect the seasonal produce that they acquire. The fresh bread and amuse bouche were excellent to start with and then the various courses ensued. There were some truly some outstanding courses but too many to remember. I particularly remember that the meat and fish courses being superb, but with the amazing amount of work and additional elements to each dish it is impossible to describe these with true accuracy. I likened the food to Michael Caine's (Michellin chef not actor obviously) in terms of presentation and flavour combinations. All in all the cuisine was at an unbelievable standard that showed creativity, knowledge and execution. Some dishes were far stronger than others, but this is the nature of a chef designed tasting menu which I cannot criticize as not everything will be to your personal taste every time, simply that this part of the experimental nature of this style, and is what you are actually paying for. The service was impeccable from start to finish. The only thing I might say is that as the place is quite small and it can take a pre dinner drink or two to relax a little as you do feel slightly that every other table can hear what you are saying - but this soon dissolves as other diners get involved in what's happening at their table. Certainly a unique experience with some very accomplished cooking. A very nice treat indeed and we hope to return if we are in the Ashbourne area again. Well done and thanks

“Superb”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

Been to the Dining Rooms several times now over the last year-or-so. Food, drink and service are always first class. Pre-xmas lunch in December 2013 was a special treat which was thoroughly enjoyed by all 3 of us. Always first on the list for a special celebration, and they never let us down!

“Great meal!”
Reviewed December 24, 2013 via mobile

We visited the Dining Room with another couple for a Christmas meal out, knowing that the menu was going to be anything but traditional. We weren't disappointed as we enjoyed nibbles and bread then Jerusalem artichoke soup with black winter truffle followed by shrimp fishcake. The main course was coq au vin, which was very good. The dessert of chocolate with yuzu sorbet, pear and chestnut was amazing. A great evening. Thanks.
