We stayed in room 2 the superior room, it was lovely and warm with great views of the countryside. Bottled still and fizzy water from the lake district was replenished every day as well as shower gel shampoo and hand wash. Room
came with a shower, digital tv and hair dryer. The only downside to the room was the bed and pillows, too hard and too soft respectively. The room was very warm when the wall heater was on, lovely when it was cold outside!!
We had dinner both nights, huge portions, from a small menu which had daily specials. I had roast lamb with mash and roast potatoes, massive amounts of meat, wife had scampi Thermidor which was langoustines in a gorgeous sauce. Next night was venison steak and oven roast breaded cod with pesto butter. Fantastic food, other specials were duck and sea bass. Priced between £9-13, they had a small mains menu again priced about the same. We didn't have starters or desserts but they looked and smelled lovely. Excellent choice of ales, we counted 6, plus welsh cider, strawberry ale and a few lagers and Guinness, prices ranged from £3.40-3.80, very reasonable indeed!! The bar itself was lovely and cosy with coal burning stoves both ends of the pub. Farming tools adorned the walls as well as stuffed animals. Really nice ambience and friendly locals and staff.
Brekkie was great, usual assortment of cereals etc. full monty brekkie for me both days plus wife had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and porridge next day. Couldn't fault the place, they provided a travel cot even without us asking and provided a phone to use when our wee boy wasn't well to call a doctor. There is no mobile phone signal in the area it was like going back 20years!!!! But with a place this lovely who needs Facebook and the net? A gem this place, glad we went!!!!

Many thanks for your feedback. The bed and pillow situation is a difficult one as everyone has different requirements. Maybe I could keep some harder pillows available on request!!

I have stay here several times now. Always with work.

I have the ability to book into hotels which charge a lot more than the White Hart but if I am in this part of the world I will always stay here in preverence.

The rooms are clean the bar rustic in the best sence, open fire no TV no music (unless it is live!). The food is outstanding and a fine selection of local real ales are on tap.

The staff and locals are friendly and helpful. With all of that why stay anywhere else?

Spent two nights here before moving further up into the Lakes.
We were shown to our room which appeared to be all o.k. Only after bringing our luggage upstairs did we realise that our room was above the beer cellar and that the beer cooler was attached to the outside of our room.We This hummed and buzzed and vibrated which we found to be very annoying after a long day of travelling. We knew that we could not be allocated another room as this room was the last available when i had booked earlier that day.
My husband went to the bar to ask if this cooler would be on all night long, and we were reassured that it would be turned off at 22.00 - 22.30.This was the case on the first night, however on our second night my husband had to go down to the bar at 23.00 to request that this be turned off - the bar staff had forgotten to do this even though the bar was empty of customers and was obviously closed for the night.
Food was very good, as was the food service.Bar and all other inner areas very clean
I must say that the attitude of the breakfast staff on our first morning there (Steph) left a lot to be desired. When i came down stairs at 08.25 the waitress (as i discovered her to be , who was just coming into the building) told me very brusquely when I asked where breakfast was being served said that "We don't serve breakfast until 08.30 - that's what I'm here for!
On leaving the following day on checking out we were asked had everything been alright and had we enjoyed our stay.We said we had enjoyed our stay, however we did remark that the room we had occupied should have some mention madeon their website of the noise from the cooler, and maybe a reduction in the price as it should not command an "Executive" price tag. We were told by Steph, that "Well this is a working pub and you have to expect some noise!"
We were only trying to make the point that this room should have some mention of the cooler and that maybe a modest price reduction to reflect this. Steph then said "Well if you had the room above the kitchen you would get the smells from the kitchen"
I found that Stephs attitude to a customer most unfortunate.
As I have said at the start of my review food and food service was excellent, the pub is beautifully clean(although could do with some attention to the scruffy back yard which our room overlooked.)
Will not be returning.

Thank you for your comments. The beer cooler is turned off as and when requested (if not requested usually at 10.30/11.00pm so I feel there is no need to mention this in our advertising. The reason it was not turned off the second night maybe to having different staff on duty. I hardly think £70.00 for two people inc breakfast is an executive price tag. I will speak to Steph about your comments regarding her attitude and see if there is room for improvement..

Im sorry that you feel it necessary not to return, however if you do have a change of heart I will arrange some form of recompense.

A cosy, welcoming, genuine old pub with well-equipped, immaculate rooms. Low beams and brasses, but far from the tacky usual. Great range of real ales and good food, surprisingly adventurous for a relatively small inn (in a tiny, peaceful village). Separate (upstairs) breakfast room with views over meadow to wooded fell through a massive picture window. Surprisingly easy access to The Lakes. We forgot to clear a couple of drawers and the contents were parceled up and posted to us within 2 days - how good is that?!!! Pity the weather didn't behave itself - we'll have to go back!

Room Tip: We were in Room 1 with views out 2 windows across the village and meadow.

We stayed there two nights while touring the Lake District. Room was clean and neat, with nice view overlooking the meadow. Ben the bartender was very helpful and took great care of us. Breakfast was great, and came with everything I love and can't get in the USA. Didn't get to meet Nigel, who I heard was a former TT racer. Being an avid motorcyclist, and TT fan, I would have enjoyed that. Location is a bit remote, but was fine for us - after running all day, we just wanted a good meal, a couple of pints, and to hang out with the locals.

Very friendly staff and warm reception. The room was very comfortable and even had included bottles of water as well as the usual tea and coffee making facilities. We only stayed one night, but wished it had been for longer. The food was excellent, if a little on the pricey side and we were squashed onto a small table in the bar, however it was a Saturday evening and they were busy. The breakfast was very good and varied . Would certainly go back!

Sorry about the small table! It is possible to book a table in advance in an area to your liking. We do try to be competitive with our prices on everything. We only use quality local produce and feel the price we charge reflect this and gives good value for money. Many thanks for your feedback
