Mae's Tea Room (North Lakes – back o’ Skidda) is a tea room and art gallery housed in the old schoolhouse. The fruit crumble with cream is totally recommended (and yes, I am an expert in such things). The filter coffee is great and comes with a nice mint choccie. I don't normally get past the crumble and try other things but there are also home-made cakes and scones (with jam and cream or just butter if you want), sticky toffee pudding, traybakes and cold desserts such as cheesecake.

For those looking for something savoury (I never am), savoury dishes include paninis and other sandwiches or, if you prefer, cooked meals.

Mae's is also open in the evenings at weekends and, in addition to the food, also often has live music. The food and music evenings are very popular and booking is advisable.

The art gallery is mostly local artists and generally excellent landscapes, many showing the wonderful Lakeland peaks and generally at sensible prices. There are also other local crafts for sale such as pottery, jewellery etc.

The staff are very friendly and attentive and the service is good. Also important for lone travellers such as myself, they will take the time to chat to you and not just serve you food.

The views of the Lakeland fells from both the indoor and outdoor seating is superb!

(Damn – wish I hadn’t given their crumble such a good write-up now – that’s twice I’ve gone in there and some beggar’s eaten it all!)

We were delighted when we found this wonderful location for coffee, tea and scones earlier in the week that we just had to book an evening meal. We're so pleased that we did! Wonderful food, incredible value for money (we live near London and are used to paying more for poorer food and no views of the fells either) and outstanding service. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Thank you so much.

Mae's is in an old school has been made into an unusual gift shop and tea room. We were expecting great things following previous reviews although these were from last year? We had the Sunday lunch at £13 for two courses. The was beef was brisket, a much cheaper cut and this was a bit tough. The lamb shank was in a sickly sweet sauce. Yorks pudding very good and veg ok. Desserts not great, cheesecake a bit heavy. Ice cream sundae very simple. Would try here again for sandwiches etc.

This is a very old school converted to a tea shop / restaurant / art gallery.
The service is personal and very friendly. Food is made to order, not mass produced and tastes great. For desert there is a range of hand made deserts.
There is a range of wines (and local beers) but no wine list so you need to ask what they have.
Mae's is worth visit with both your family and friends etc. The also host a range of events eg wine tasting which according to the local are worth going to but I've not been.
I'm definitely going back there.

I just love this place and always call in when in thr area. The food is superb, presentation and service immaculate... far more than you would expect from this wonderfully sleeply little hamlet. Hunt this hidden gem out. Travel to it. Be it for Sunday lunch or a still warm from the oven fruit scone with clotted cream. You will not regret it.
