“A Great End to a Holiday”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

We dined at the Duke William, Staveley, Cumbria, last Friday. The food was excellent, all meat sourced from the local butcher and a goodly sized portion. From Steak Ale and Mushroom Pie, to home made Meatballs in tomato sauce to Cumberland Sausage we were very satisfied indeed. The pie had the best puff pastry we have ever tasted. The portions were generous and served by friendly staff who made us very welcome. The price of each main course was just £4.95 - astonishingly good value. I would seek this pub out again if we're ever in the area. We visited it for a meal to round off a good holiday in the Lake District and were NOT disappointed. - Quite Splendid!

“Nice little pub not very nice meal”
Reviewed August 9, 2013 via mobile

We went or something to eat here on our last night in stavely. We had been previously or some drinks and were made to feel welcome. The food however was cold when we got it and wasn't very nice. The portion size was good and well priced but personally I don't enjoy my meal.

“Wouldn't go back!”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

The food was very cheap but limited choice and portion size. After a long day hiking would rather pay more for larger meal and better quality. Drinks a rip off. Bar man/landlord a misery! Staff not overly friendly either! Everyone left after eating! Go up the road to Eagle and Child great atmosphere and better beer/ larger soft drinks

“Note new phone number! 01539 822245”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

I share the excellent opinion of the vast majority of reviewers of the Duke William. We've lived in Staveley 20 years, went to the Duke once only in early days, weren't impressed, but much more recently have started going back there regularly and thoroughly enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and excellent very reasonably-priced food. Ruth's fishcakes are superb! Titling this review about the phone number - the old one given on this site was changed years ago! We could walk and make a booking but many might be frustrated.

“Homely pub with good & reasonable choice of food where humans & dogs are made to feel very welcome”
Reviewed May 25, 2013 via mobile

Called in on my way home on the recommendation of an old friend - thanks Harold! Asked for sandwiches which weren't on the menu which was no problem to the congenial hosts but having seen the main course selection at under £5, I decided on the pork chop option & said I'd be in the beer garden as I had the dog in the car. The owners were concerned I'd be cold & made it clear that the dog could come inside but I preferred the garden & read one of the many newspapers made available before using the free wifi & throwing the frisby for the dog. The pub & toilets were very clean, the food was fine & it's great to have Woody woofer to be made so welcome, thank you & best wishes.
