This was my second stay at The Hermitage whilst on the C2C. You know the place will be good when you see how nice the gardens are kept as you arrive. We got a friendly welcome and our wet things were taken straight away to dry. It's a lovely house and the rooms are big with comfortable beds. The quality of the breakfast is second to none

Central to the village, we stopped as part of the C2C walk. Very friendly welcome from the landlady who provided one of the most memorable breakfast feasts I have ever had - provided on a large platter including wonderful sausages and bacon with all the trimmings. We had the large bedroom with comfy twin beds and en suite bathroom. No complaints whatsoever.

Lovely slightly quirky property. Large comfortable room . En suite bathroom with bath and selection of products including radox.  If you want to leave early in the morning , then let the landlady know as she likes to stagger the breakfast times. Lovely rear garden which is freely available for use by guests.

My husband borrowed a mobile and phoned Jean from Shap Abbey to tell her that my ankle was terribly sprained and there was no way we could be at the Hermitage for a 7 p.m. dinner. After a very pleasant conversation, we continued on but before long, she came to our rescue in her car and drove us back to the Hermitage. Dinner had to be at a local pub as her schedule had changed but had we had our own phone, she could have contacted us.
We found the Hermitage to be clean, welcoming, full of character and run by a woman who is truly passionate about what she does.
Yes, it is on the pricier side but so very well worth it after a very long day on the C2C and when you see what Jean and Joshua do to make this a worthwhile and relaxing stay. If you are looking for a cheap and cheerful youth hostel experience where you can whip up some oatmeal in the shared kitchen before you set off, don't stay here.
If you want to experience the kind of bed and breakfast the is run how it should be, this is your place.
Oh, and yes, in agreement with all other reviews, breakfast is stunning! Abundant and delicious.
We will be back there when we re-commence the C2C,

We arrived here after a long walk on our C2C journey and were expecting quite a lot as the most expensive place we had booked along our route! On arrival after ringing the bell twice and knocking, Jean eventually came to the door and said "you should have just come in!" Well, I for one would not expect to do that at anyone's house unless I knew them well!
We were immediately told to take our boots off which was fine but there are ways to say things! (We felt like we had walked into a headmistresses home!) We were shown to our room (2 singles and a day bed) although we had booked a double but told we had been put in there as it was above the aga and would be warmer! The en-suite was large (and cold) and only had a curtain between it and the bedroom. Breakfast was good, no complaints here. All in all, yes it was ok, not the most welcoming and definately overpriced!

Legendary breakfasts, good homely service from Mrs Jackson. Ask her about the civil war connection. She buys all her meat at the local butcher (2 minute walk) whose produce is fantastic. Never tasted black pudding like it. Miles of Cumberland sausage. Quiet surrounds. Beds good, most en-suite. Been 3 times and will return. Makes for a convenient overnight stop when travelling from the south to either Scottish highlands or Cairnryan ferry to N Ireland. tel:
