Pleasant trip through some nice countryside with some very good views. The train goes at a pace that gets the journey done while giving you time to look around and not miss anything. Things to do at both ends while you wait for the next train, and friendly staff.

We took the early steam train from Ravenglass to eskdale, a lovely journey through the picturesque countryside. Having planned to walk half way back to Ravenglass via a couple of hostelries we set off on foot. We stopped as planned at a great little pub and ate lunch, then set off once again. For some reason we managed to lose our way and ended up taking an uncharted path that rose up high above Eskdale. To get back towards our goal we went off piste and eventually found our way back to the railway line guided by the steam rising from the valley below. We simply walked along to the next stop and flagged down the next train that came along. This was just one stop away from Ravenglass but we were so glad to see the little train after our un scheduled trek. We both came away with the impression that the guys love their work and were most impressed with our trip.

Thoroughly enjoyed our second trip on the railway, enough to keep the attention of small children and a great cafe at Dalegarth.

Wonderful day out for sure - as long as you are wrapped up on a colder day, just perfect to feel and smell the steam! Makes one think of many years ago without the comfort of modern day trains. The engines are so well cared for and the staff really seem to enjoy their job, making it a very good day out. Excellent cafes both end. Thoroughly recommend a trip.

We stayed in one of the camping coaches adjacent to the railway, so woke each day to the sound of the trains shunting back and forth getting the carriages ready for their journeys through the beautiful Cumbrian scenery. It was rather surreal to feel as if one were living on the station, but thoroughly to be recommended.Following the fire in the maintenance shed earlier this year which damaged three of their own locos.,the railway has two engines on loan - one from Norfolk (Bure Valley, I think) and one from RH & DR. Although the journey is pleasant when it's with the diesel,it is definitive when it is steam hauled, so it's worth checking ahead to find out when they are running if this matters to you. (NB If you are staying in one of the two camping coaches, the person making the booking gets unlimited free travel on the railway and the other occupants travel for 25% of the full fare).
