Owner description: The historic and reputedly haunted Castle dating from the mediaeval age has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. It is a treasury of beautiful art and antiques, collected through the ages by the family who still live there. The Castle sits majestically in over 70 acres of wild, woodland gardens famous for collections of rhododendrons and azaleas set against the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland fells including Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. The Bird of Prey Centre is well worth a visit with daily displays at 2.30Pm and watch the wild herons come in to feed at Heron Happy Hour at 4pm. The indoor MeadowVole Maze is an entertaining ecological attraction to entertain the young at heart. Playground, cafe, gift shops and an ancient church are all within the gardens. Regular events programme, including festivals, outdoor theatre, historical re-enactors and Halloween Week.

Muncaster Castle is a great day out for people of any age there is plenty to see and do lots of activities taking place walks around several of the gardens, and plenty of exciting stuff for children to take part in, a cannon is activated every so often, then there is the Castle which is fascinating steeped in history with a lot of facts and fiction surrounding it, I shall not say any more it will only spoil things for people who have not been yet but what I shall say is a visit to Muncaster Castle is worth the journey you will not be disappointed.

The castle tour took approx 45mins and is steeped in history, lovely paintings and antiques and the grounds are very picturesque, too much to do in one visit!

We have been promising ourselves a visit here for a long time, and we were not disappointed. You need to be here just before half past two to walk the short distance to the Castle for the excellent and informative 'Meet the Birds' display on the front lawn. We followed this excellent start to our visit with a very tasty and reasonably priced light lunch, then walked with our two dogs in the delightful grounds. At four we sat in front of the Castle to watch the herons coming in for their feed, with again, a most informative commentary from one of the keepers. We then spent an hour or more in the Owl enclosures, a brilliant display and we congratulate the Owl Centre on their conservation work and their rehabilitation of injured birds
We will certainly return, hopefully with our grandchildren next time they come to visit us up here. We considered the £10 entrance fee good value for money and also heartily congratulate the Castle on providing free car parking. The rest of Cumbrian attractions, towns and villages . . . take note !

We have just spent a great weekend at muncaster castle owl sanctuary as part of "be a keeper for a day" which was an 85 the birthday present for my partner Ron Charlton. We were accompanied by the present givers our son and daughter. What a marvellous experience. We were greeted by our keeper Terry, a very knowledgeable and lovely man, he gave us a talk about all the owls and then we accompanied him during feeding time. We could not believe all the different breeds of owls. Then the head keeper Woolfie took over and we had another tour of the sanctuary. After this we were allowed to carry an owl each around the grounds, a wonderful experience, Toby and Fidget were so well behaved. We then took part in a display while other tourists looked on. All in all we were with the owls some 4 hours. Our overnight accommodation in the coachmans quarters was very nice. We would certainly recommend this attraction.

We visited the castle and gardens on 28th May and I felt that I had to write in support of the review posted by Peter W from Sheffield. I couldn't improve on his wording. I suppose that admission is quite expensive - we paid £14 each, including entrance to the castle - but you do get a LOT for that, and it's the kind of place where you can easily spend several hours
