“loved it!”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

I have just arrived back from an overnight stay at Muncaster's Coachman's Quarters & I must say it well earns its 4 star rating. We stayed in a room overlooking the owls with a well appointed bathroom and, even with 3 beds in the room, it was still a very spacious room. The freshly cooked breakfast was excellent & all the staff I interacted with were friendly, courteous & helpful. The rest of the facilities inluded a fully equiped kitched, lounge & dining room for the guests to use.The room cost included entrance into the owl centre & gardens, with just a small supplement to enter the castle.
The owl centre staff were very knowledgable & willing to answer all of our questions. The conservation talk given at the front lawn was humerous while passing on a lot of good infomation. The children loved the talk & the chance to hold a barn owl.
My only minor disappointment was that there wasnt somewhere to eat dinner without travelling & if the sample menus were correct not really suitable for children, as a precaution I had taken some food with me "just in case", and made use of the kitchen.
Would i stay there again?....absolutely, but would take an easy prepared meal if travelling with children.

Room Tip: room 1 is very spacious & suitable for disabled

We stayed here for two nights. The room was clean and comfortable with everything you need. The bed was very soft but we actually slept quite well. The breakfasts were excellent and cooked freshly to order - you could choose exactly what you wanted and how many of each item (within reason!) There is a clean, well equipped kitchen which can be used to cook your own food if you want and a large comfy lounge with a flat screen TV, books, games and jigsaws.
You will not be able to get a phone signal but there is a payphone with reasonable charges or you can phone out from the room although I'm not sure of the charges. There is also free Wifi which worked well in room 6 so we could use FB chat or What's app to contact people.
If you want to eat out in the evening you will have to travel away from the castle. I suggest you reserve a table even for a bar snack as local pubs were very busy.
The best bit was being able to wander around the gardens and the owls when the public had left. It is a lovely spot and very quiet and peaceful.
All members of staff were helpful and friendly without being 'over the top' . All in all it was a very relaxing couple of nights - we would definitely stay again.

Stayed for two nights in comfortable, clean and well serviced accommodation. We have stayed several times before and will most certainly be doing so again. The accommodation is excellent value with a well equipt kitchen available for resident use. Also the castle grounds are open as part of the cost and always a pleasure to walk around.

Stayed for two nights bed and breakfast in Coachmans Quarters. Our room overlooked the owls , one of which seemed to be having a conversation with the wood pigeons. The room was very comfortable and the breakfasts were delicious, served by friendly and helpful staff. The grounds were magnificent and the advantage of staying there was once the public had left for the day, we had the grounds for the rest of the evening. The meals served during the day in the little cafe are very good value. Excellent value for money all round.

We stayed here using a living social voucher but to be honest I would have paid full price.
Losing mobile cover was actually a blessing as I stopped working! The rooms were spotless, comfortable and warm. The castle, the grounds and seeing the owls was just brilliant and the staff were so so lovely. We were actually shown to our rooms by the Lady of the castle who was just lovely. It is in a beautiful part if the world and the views from the castle are simply breath taking.
The breakfast on both days was fabulous and the kitchen facility in the accommodation was spotless. We will definitely be going back!

WE RECENTLY STAYED IN THE COACHMANS QUATERS IN THE CASTLE GROUNDS,WHAT A FANTASTIC FACILITY.WE WERE IN FOR BED AND BREAKFAST,BUT THERE IS ALSO THE FACILITY FOR YOU TO TAKE YOUR OWN FOOD FOR DINNER AND/OR EVENING MEAL.The room was very spacious we stopped in room 4, the bed was king size and we had a great nights sleep, there are also an abundance of facilities for your use all included in the price,a lounge,a fully fitted kitchen and dining room, etc, breakfast in the morning is downstairs in the courtyard at creeping kates cafe, your breakfast can be as big or small as you want, served to you at the table,by very happy and pleasant staff, try it you will love it.

Room Tip: i would imagine all the rooms are superb, you are in castle grounds, well away from anywhere.

Ok, on reflection it's basic. No wifi or signal for mobiles. No on site dining except breakfast. Rooms are basic but clean.
After a days travel to have to get back in the car and find somewhere to eat was a real pain. After 9 the staff leave so you're on your own until morning. Good hearty breakfast but doesn't everyone do that now. Not worth £80. I would only pay max £40 per night.
Staff were nice but it was not what I expected.

Thank you for your review. Although in the evening there is no member of staff in the offices beneath the Coachman's Quarters, there is always someone on site, usually in the Castle, who can be contacted by the internal phone system. We do provide free WiFi. Regrettably, on your visit, the power supply to the nearest network box to your room had failed. This has now been replaced, but if you had tried in the kitchen, lounge or outside in the courtyard you would have picked up a signal from another unit. I accept this is not as convenient as being able to gain internet access in your room for which I apologise. Much as we would love to be able to offer good mobile coverage, this is beyond our powers and apparently the mobile network providers also. I don't think you can blame us for that. It is what happens in rural areas. Many of our guests enjoy the peace!
I'm glad you found the staff nice and the breakfast good.
On site food is available all day and evening meals can be arranged in advance. There are a number of good pubs a 5 minute drive away and guests are given a book of vouchers with money off vouchers for our sister hotels & restaurants. Staying with us also allows free entry to the 77 acres of woodland gardens and the Owl Centre during your stay which saves £20 for a couple. I suspect you came for an overnight stay only and did not have time to fully appreciate the setting of the Coachman's Quarters the next day. Our bedrooms are simple yet comfortable and we have been awarded 4 stars for the standard of our guest accommodation. If you wished something higher quality with a restaurant and bar in the evening I suggest you stay at one of our sister hotels, either the Pennington in Ravenglass or Sella Park Country House Hotel in Calder Bridge.
