“Good for the Soul!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2008

A well needed week away was spent in the Western Lake District, and Rosegarth Guest House in Ravenglass excelled. A tiny village, a comfortable place to stay and lots of fresh air & good food.
Waking up every morning to the most amazing, uninterrupted ever changing views across the estuary was fantastic, it made me want to sleep with the cutains open! The room was lovely, clean and bright, with a comfy chair for book reading by the window, binoculars for bird watching and yummy fairtrade teas, coffee and hot chocolate in the room. A TV with freeview channels & DVD player was also available, although I mostly used it for the radio. Good storage and hanging space meant I was able to unpack - not always an option in the smaller rooms of some hotels.
The owners were great, very personable and extremely informative about the local area. Having recently moved here and taken over Rosegarth (although originally being from west Cumbria I believe), their enthusiasm was catching. When I asked about hiking I was furnished with information, options and maps to borrow, and on a wet return my boots, socks and jacket were whisked away to be dried overnight!
The breakfasts were delicious & filling, using local produce, and provided several options to try. Packed luch was also available to order, to take on my days out. The house seemed old, victorian I think, well looked after and full of history & charm, as is the whole village, perched between mountains and sea.
It takes a little while to drive to this side of the Lake District, but is well worth it for the serenity and hospitality of Rosegarth. I can't wait for my next escape, I'm definately going back!

Rose Garth is a fabulous place to stay in the Lake District. The rooms are spotless. There is every extra you can imagine in your room - nice toiletries, flat screen tv, fluffy towels, hot chocolate, biscuits etc etc. It is better than many 4* hotel I have stayed in. The owners were very welcoming. The breakfasts were great - they put a lot of thought into the options. A healthy smoked salmon and scrambled egg beautifully presented, a hearty full english with exceptional quality ingredients and a very nice vegetarian option. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone. And we will be returning some time soon.

Had a wonderfully relaxing weekend break at Rose Garth. The hosts made us feel part of the family - nothing was too much trouble. The food was of the highest quality - the breakfast awesome! It was great to have a cup of tea that was made the old fashioned way - loose tea leaves and brewed in a pot.

If you are interested in the local area this is the place to stay. Neil and Denise are very knowledgeable about the locality with lots of personal recommendations. They turned out to be keen walkers themselves so knew just where to go.

The bedrooms are exceptionally clean, comfortable and spacious with tea/coffee making facilities as well as bottled water.

I would highly recommend Rose Garth to stay - we are looking forward to our return visit!

I stayed at Rose Garth Guest House with a friend in May 2008. We were looking for a relaxing break and time to see the beautiful sights.
This is exactly what we got from staying at Rose Garth. Although the owners Neil and Denise had only just taken over the guest house they knew the area and were able to offer brilliant advice on places to go and sights to see. They were very welcoming and accomodating throughout the stay.
The rooms were clean and spacious, with tea and coffee facilities.
Breakfast served in the morning offered a wide variety and high standard with enough to keep you going for the walks around the lakes!
Rose Garth is a short drive from Wast Water and the heart of Cumbria, with many attractions within walking distance.
When I return to The Lakes I will definatly come back to Rose Garth.

Off on my business travels yet again, but this time took the missus for a weekend bolt-on!

We arrived at the Rose Garth the evening of Valentine's Day and were greeted in the car park by Alex (I believe that Jean was away with relatives). He was very welcoming and hospitable. We were taken to the room and due to the night arrival could not immediately appreciate the views.

Next morning, went downstairs for breakfast (as well as a dining room there is a lounge for residents). Fantastic breakfast with an excellent full English vegetarian option. As an aside the eggs used in the breakfasts are produced on site by some very healthy looking hens.

The room, a double, was fairly spacious and had excellent views of the estuary at the front of the property and even binoculars were supplied in the room for eyeing up the boats! The shower was the most powerful found in a guest house so far and was great after a few hours walking around the local area. Storage space was also provided by a shelving unit, a wardrobe and bedside shelves. There were also drinks facilities with complimentary tea/coffee/biscuits and hot chocolate (a large amount of the food and drink used at Rose Garth are fairtrade products).

The surrounding areas, as with much of the Lakes I suspect, gave many opportunities for exploration on foot as well as by vehicle, with the shore, the local railway attraction of "L'al Ratty," Muncaster Castle a 10-15 minute walk away and also a Roman Bath House. A little further is Sellafield, with it's free-to-visit Visitor Centre. Alex was on hand at all times for local knowledge and tips on what to visit (there were also magazines and brochures available in the room for reference). A recommendation for food for lunch or in the evening would be the Ratty Arms, a few minutes walk away; though beware of their large portions!! There is also a Tea Room in the guest house itself in-season for drinks and lunch food.

Throughout our stay, the free wireless internet was very helpful for looking up vist suggestions and for any opening details, etc., and for keeping up with the e-mails!

For anyone visiting Ravenglass or the surrounding Lakes, I would recommend Rose Garth for a very comfortable and welcoming stay! If I am lucky to be working in the area again, I will be making a return visit!
