Just stayed as part of a large group walking, open water swimming and cycling and were made very welcome. It was wet ( well it is near England`s wettest place ) but the drying room was excellent. Good breakfast, evening meal and the bar was just what you needed at the end of an active day. No great luxury but all you need if you are an outdoors person. Staff were great.

A group of us spent two nights in Wasdale swimming and walking. The Hostel is right on the lake side making swimming easy to access. The great drying room was a real bonus.
Food good as was the beer, and the staff were simply superb! This is a fantastic Hostel in a really beautiful place.

Room Tip: Family rooms are available.

Just back from a lovely break at Wastwater. The staff were amazingly helpful and couldn't have done more to make it a nice stay for us. I'm vegan and thought that there wouldn't be much they could provide for me but, as it turned out, I had the best choice of food I think I've ever had on a holiday. The staff rang me a few days before our holiday and offered a list of things to choose from. They also went to the trouble of providing soya milk and vegan custard and made us some really good packed lunches. We were given good tips on walks around Wastwater. The location is amazing! Also, lovely pubs about 20 mins walk away (take a torch if you're going to be out for last orders!). Will definitely be going again. Can't wait. The best service I've ever had in over 30 years of youth hostelling.

I feel priveleged to have stayed at the Wastwater YHA for a couple of nights.

The room was massive with a stunning view over the lake and scree slopes.

The youngsters running the place couldn't have been more helpful and the level of service we received was worthy of a much grander brand.

The place was easy to find, plenty of parking, games room, effective drying room, lovely beer and possibly the world's best sticky toffee pudding

Downside - the shower badly needed refurbishment but hey everything was so good.

Stayed here with 6 friends for a weekend when walking Scafell Pike. We all arrived at different times on the Friday and the staff were so welcoming. We preordered our evening meal and I can honestly say it was fantastic - better than some hotel food I have tried. The breakfast was equally delicious. The hostel itself was clean, cosy and comfortable. And the location was stunning - right on the edge of Wastwater. Really cannot think of a negative......hmmmm apart from maybe finding it - but then again, even that little adventure added to a wonderful weekend

We drove up from Birmingham and being an idiot had managed to leave my walking boots back at home!! Bob who was on duty was incredibly friendly and offered a pair of his for the next days hike. THANKYOU!!!!! He was very welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable about the area!!

The location is fantastic for Scarfell Pike and surrounding area. The Hostel itself is perfectly placed just above a lake which looks amazing in the morning and sunset. Plenty of free parking too. Rooms where average for a YHA but the house generally had buckets of character.

My only suggestion would be make sure you get some food sorted before the kitchen closes as otherwise you will have a long drive to the nearest takeaway! If out n about and you think youl try to find the YHA at night TAKE A GOOD MAP! Very hard to find it in the dark :)

Walking in the Lake District in an English summer can be a bit of a mixed pleasure. During the four hours our walk in the Lake District took we managed to have sun and a seemingly force nine gale and for the last 20 minutes driving rain. So when we got the YHA Wastwater we were soggy and in need of a comfy shelter from the storm. Two combined families of three adults and four very energetic teenage and near teenage children piled in its warm interior.

The building is a wonderful Edwardian solid one set in the most fabulous location. The house means that there is a library and dining room that would not look out of place in a country house hotel. We split into boys and girls and stayed in the two bunk rooms which were very well planned and an adventure for the children. The beds were very comfortable and clean. We hadn't brought supper so had it in house - including a nice bottle of wine. The food was good but just a bit on the pricey side for what it was. My only criticism here would be the suggestion that a cheaper alternative - pasta or rice dish - would be a good idea for a place where many are travelling on a strict budget.

I didn't see the rooms designed for couples but understood they are available.

The children were very well catered for with a pool and table tennis table downstairs in the old cellar and games in the library. They also played football outside the next morning when the weather cleared.

The showers were great - just the thing after a tiring walk.

The communal kitchen is very well equipped and an added bonus was being able to buy delicious bread baked in a small bakery in the next village, a five minute drive away. There is also a well stocked village shop next to it. A bit of advice here - be prepared to queue for the bakery - there can be a bit of a line waiting to get inside!

The staff were all helpful, efficient and very welcoming.

We didn't really see the glory of the place until the next morning when its location right on the edge of the lake with a mountain soaring away on the other side was really revealed. ,

All in all, a great place to stay, enjoy the Lake District and the wonderful welcoming spirit that the YHA still manages to maintain.

Room Tip: If you are not used to YHA the communal dormitory may come as a bit of a surprise. Once you have ta...
