We loved staying here. The hostel has a lake frontage so we swam in Wastwater both days of our stay - the water was cold but invigorating. The staff were all very friendly and helpful - there was a happy atmosphere. The refurbishment of the dining room and lounge of the old hall was beautifully done. Food was impeccable.

The building and location are beautiful and it is ideally suited for climbing scafell which is why we booked. The accommodation is fairly basic (which is to be expected) but good value for money. It is immaculate and the staff are incredibly helpful, overall I would definitely recommend it to anyone walking in the area.

It's been about 16 years since I hostelled (then as a single person). On holiday from Malaysia, my husband and I wanted to introduce our 2 children 10 & 8 to The Lakes, for 5 days. Knowing that we couldn't rely on the weather, hostelling won over camping.
Although we were split up between Male & Female dorms (family rooms were booked early), the children enjoyed the experience (although snoring was a problem for the
boys!)
We found fresh cotton bed linen including a warm duvet on the unoccupied beds, which were surprisingly comfy. All toilets and showers were clean, tidy and well maintained.
No more chores to be done before leaving for the day, all meals available, great afternoon cakes and a welcome licensed bar! A vaulted games room in the cellar, excellent reading room with board games kept many occupied.
Self catering kitchen was a bit small, but we managed to work alongside fellow hostellers.
The Wardens and staff were all very friendly and helpful and with the stunning location of the hostel on the edge of Waswater, certainly well worth visiting again.
The YHA has changed a lot from how many may remember so check them out for future holidays.

Basic accomodation BUT Location incredable, spotlessly clean and very comfortable.
Food good and staff have a good sense of humour and were excellent. Would have no hesitation in staying again. Thanks

I have just returned from the Wastwater YH having organised a trip for over 45 people .

I must say that this hostel is an absolute gem.

The accomadation is in an old house which sleeps about 50 people .The accomodation is impecably clean and has every amenity that you could require .

The staff could not be more helpful . ........Some of our group were late returning follwing the walk we had organised . The local pubs were refusing to do us meals and the staff simply pitched in and made us a fantastic chili .....all for £7 !!

Every member of the staff was friendly and wanted to make our experience fun . They even had the most entertaining and best behaved dog called Jeff .......fantastic name !

We chose self catering as it saved money for the charity we were supporting. The self catering kitchen was big enough to cater for all our group and again very clean .

The location : One of the most stunning in the lakes and ive seen most of it

Local Pubs : The strands was good for food and ale but i was disappointed that they would not accomadate 16 of us when we returned late . The screes ......all Ok

Would we go back ?........ive already started planning for the next trip . I have nothing bad i can think of this place .

Thanks Bob , Jeff and gang
