“Exceptional Service and Attention to Detail”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

Jane and David are exceptional hosts who pay great attention to detail and their customer requirements. When told we were having pork for evening meal I mentioned my like of apple sauce Jane went to pick apples from their own tree and we had fresh apple sauce on the table that night. It is a beautiful house and I suggest you try to stay in the main house if you can. Delicious breakfasts. Comfortable drawing room. At the time we stayed wireless internet was patchy due to the thick walls; something Jane was working on.

Room Tip: try to get a room in the main house

Many thanks for your super comments. We're glad the cottage accommodation suited your needs as a family requiring two bedrooms. The WiFi is usually good in the cottage but is also available free of charge in the bedrooms and reception area in Moresby Hall. Our wonderful espalier apple trees in the walled garden serve us well and our Howgate Beauty variety grows to a massive size and makes scrumptious apple sauce and jam. Perfect with the chops in cider for sure!! We hope to see you next time you are visiting family in the area, best wishes.

I've now stayed twice in Moresby Hall, the hotel is in a lovely grade 1 building and with the decor to match. Both rooms I've stayed in, whilst different, have been in keeping with the building and very comfy with nice modern bathrooms.
Service is very relaxed but attentive, it's obviously a family ran place so all you need to do is ask.

The only minor negative is the size of the tv's, one of the rooms I've stayed in had a huge footprint but a 21" TV on a opposite wall. It's not a hotel you should come to to watch TV, but worth noting if you do like one.

I visited on business, they don't formally do food during the week but will if you ask beforehand, it's that sort of place. Highly recommended.

Many thanks for the positive review. Comments noted about the size of the TV but as there is also a colour TV in the en-suite bathroom with the Jacuzzi Bath we decided to keep the emphasis on the room decor and not detract from the sumptuous 7' x 7' four poster bed. Mon - Thur we can offer dinner by prior arrangement as not everyone wishes to dine. We have a limited number of bedrooms and there are some nights when guests would prefer to dine out locally and visit Whitehaven for the evening. We love to cook for our guests and there is also a fine dining menu available online for Fridays / Saturdays but it is essential to prebook / pre order in advance. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. Jane

A friend and I stayed for one night - Jane & David Saxon couldn't have been more helpful from recommending inn for Sunday evening supper to providing space for us to change having booked out. Fabulous shower, very comfortable bed and room, delicious breakfast and beautiful gardens - thank you.

Its very good of you to take the trouble to post a fantastic review, as I know you were visiting, sadly, to attend a funeral locally. Perhaps we will see you again in the future when you are next in the area, and you will have time to enjoy the relaxing ambience at Moresby Hall. Best wishes - Jane

From the moment we walked through the front door, we knew this was a very special place. After a long flight from the US, Jane made us feel so welcome. Our room (Egremount) was immaculate and the modern shower amazing.. Moresby wasn't just a place to stay for ten nights, it became home thanks to the many acts of kindness by Jane and David. Breakfasts and dinner were delicious. We have traveled to many countries but this is the best hotel experience we have ever had.

What a great review, we are delighted you felt so much at home and I know David especially was glad to help with some of the queries prior to you moving into premises here. It's a big upheaval to move to a new country on business so we were happy to help in any small way. Hope to see you both in the future. Jane

Thank you for your great comments. Moresby Hall has both tourism & corporate guests staying throughout the year. But its always especially good to know that sole guests, sometimes here on business for long periods feel so comfortable and at home. I will pass your thanks on to our team regarding meals as they are always eager to know that our guests are happy. We hope to see you again if you are in the area.

I found this place whilst looking for somewhere to stay for a business trip to Cumbria. There aren't that many well-known hotel chains in the area and so decided to go for 'guesthouse accommodation', aided by the excellent reviews on TA as well as a couple of other accommodation comparison sites.

My experience of guesthouse accommodation is rooted in holidays to the seaside in the 70s and 80s when it was dank rooms, dire food and rude landladies, so I did approach this stay with a bit of trepidation. However, upon arriving outside the rather imposing property and seeing the beautiful condition in which the gardens are maintained, I realised that this was not your average B&B.

The welcome was warm and hospitable - it isn't a hotel, so don't expect room service or anything similar but there is the option of drinks in the evening. The room was huge and tastefully furnished with what looks like period furniture, including a fantastic 7'x7' four-poster bed (I stayed in De-Asby) which gave a wonderful night's sleep. The decor and furniture are very traditional but augmented by modern touches; a decent size Toshiba Regza flatscreen TV and an iPod dock. There was also a jug of fresh milk for the tea & coffee, which shows a good attention to detail.

The bathroom was compact but did have what I can only describe as a Tardis of a walk-in shower, with a built-in steam room facility I think. If I had had more time, I would have tried it out but instead just used the shower which was powerful and hot. The bathroom mirror is surrounded by light bulbs of the kind you get in theatre dressing rooms, so it felt like being a movie star!

I had a great night's sleep, despite it being very blowy and raining outside, so don't worry about a Grade I listed building being cold and draughty.

The second best part was breakfast the next morning. At first sight, it looked like any other hotel breakfast; individual packet cereal, jugs of fruit juice etc. and I ordered the main bits of a cooked English breakfast. I can only describe it as sensational: it wasn't a pile-it-high morass of deep fried stodge but high quality - and I presume very local - ingredients cooked with skill. On the website, Jane - one of the owners - describes herself as a self-taught cook and the cooked breakfast proved what you can do when you cook with passion. Local food, cooked well, is one of life's great pleasures. It was accompanied by some lovely granary toast and their own marmalade and a truly massive cafetiere of rather fine coffee.

OK, the best bit...the price. It was £105. That's not much more than a budget chain hotel. Granted, it's more than a normal B&B but if you want - or your expectation is for - a normal B&B than go stay somewhere else. This is a unique building that is owned by a couple who clearly a) like people and b) want to deliver a sincere and caring guest experience.

If you want to stay somewhere a little different that offers good accommodation, great food and warm hospitality, then have no hesitation in staying here.

Happy Days - what a glorious review! Moresby Hall is probably best described as a Country Guesthouse as you have done, as we are not really a hotel despite being a relatively large building. Thank you for your appreciation of the touches we hope will make our guest's stay perfect, especially in the bedrooms and particularly at breakfast. I know you were too late to have dinner on arrival so I'm happy to know you enjoyed your breakfast so much. We are very proud of our Breakfast Award from Visit Britain and our fresh fruit salad, home made bread, marmalades & preserves are commented upon very frequently. Customer service and satisfaction are so high on our list and we try to provide for each guest what we would wish to see ourselves when travelling. Best wishes - Jane & David

We have just stay at this beautiful English hall for the Jubilee Weekend. On arrival to start off our stay we had prebooked Afternoon Tea which was serviced to us in an Orangery in the beutiful grounds, the fancies just melted in one mouth.
Our hosts were delitful and made us most welcome. Our room was superb, the four poster bed was like a sett from a movie .
The full english breakfast was delicous with a choice of teas and home made jams.
My husband and I had been looking for a venue for our daughters forthcoming wedding but hadn't mentioned in our booking as we wanted to see for ourselves what the service would be like but what can I say it ticked all the boxes from the second we arrived. In the entrance hall on arrival I noticed the most Magnificat flower display only to find out that Jane our host had done it herself. Not only had we found a venue for our daughter's wedding but a fantastic florist too!! What more can I say,we will be returning with our daughter to book her special knowing that she will be in safe hands.

Thankyou Jane and David for making us most welcome in your beutiful home.

I am delighted that you had such a happy time, although over such a busy Bank Holiday period. All our cakes / scones are home made so booking our delicious Afternoon Tea usually scores well for relaxation purposes. We have hosted some wonderful small intimate weddings and also some elegant marquee weddings so there is certainly something for everyone in such a historic setting. Thank you for such a lovely review and we hope we will see you again very soon. Best wishes - Jane
