“Charming Lakes retreat”

Just returned from a three night stay in this charming cottage in the sleepy hamlet of Storth. Located in the centre of the village, a short two minute walk from the Kent Estuary, the cottage offers everything you need for a short break in the Lakes. In spite of the very cold February weather, the cottage was warm and cosy. We had taken an extra duvet with us but this wasn't required.

The owner has obviously put a lot of thought into the style and decor of the cottage. From the whitewash floorboards in the master bedroom to the pretty secluded courtyard to the rear, the cottage delivers as a great all-round holiday let by the river.

The property has two ample-sized double bedrooms and a third twin bedroom, also of a good size, so a family of six could stay comfortably, though the absence of a second bathroom may cause some inconvenience.

Storth is located in the south of Cumbria, meaning a 45 minutes drive to some of the more popular attractions of the district. There is a local bus service and a rail link in nearly Arnside. The town of Milnthorpe is a short 20 minute walk away, accessible via a public footpath. (A torch is advisable if you are planning a late one as the footpath is unlit.) The town offers a range of eateries and pubs, and a local supermarket, Booths, which offers a good range of quality products. The restaurant, No 17, was recommended to us and didn't disappoint.

If you want to eat closer to home, then we would recommend the Ship Inn, which is a five minute stroll from the cottage on the estuary front.

Liked best: Charming, cosy property; ideal for either a romantic break or a family holiday
