My wife and I, stayed there on a recent trip to the Westmorland Show, to be honest the main issue here is not the Hotel but the owners/managers a husband and wife team that would not be out of place in a 70s TV comedy. Her rude, offensive and scruffy. Him stressed, inapt and scruffy. I was informed by one of the very good members of the Bar staff of which there where many and the delightful girl who served breakfast in the morning, that there had been recent problems with the Chef who had recently resigned and left them, some what in the lurch. However that would or could not explain the wife's obnoxious behavior, when I explained the lamb chops I had ordered well done arrived with a pulse!! Or why when we left the next morning he still wanted to charge for them!! I'm sorry we won't me staying there again until there is under new Management sign put up outside.

The Cross Keys is a good budget hotel; it would perhaps benefit from some investment, but you get what you pay for. There's a warren of rooms above a busy bar and mine was comfortable enough, looking out over the main crossroads in the village. I thought the busy A6 might keep me awake but in fact there wasn't a great deal of traffic on it, and the double glazing did its job well. There are some unusual touches in the rooms; a bathrobe, which was nice, a good selection of quality shampoo and soap, and on the desk, a writing set and a pair of scissors - somebody is clearly thinking outside the box.

We've stayed here many times, and, enjoy every moment of every visit. The rooms are beautiful, the staff are lovely and very knowledgeable about the area, and, the food is brilliant. Fantastic breakfasts, very filling bar snacks and a lovely evening menu. The different night themes are really good value too, curry night, steak night etc. We've also enjoyed the wine and cheese evening too, great fun to sample the produce at really reasonable prices. The weather is obviously hard to predict, but, as one elderly gent from the village said "It's not the sunshine that keeps our beautiful Lakes topped up!!". Give it a whirl, we love it.

Room Tip: Four poster beds are available, as are family suites, all the rooms we have used have been lovely.

We stayed at the Cross Keys for the weekend and enjoyed not only the great hospitality but the excellent accommodation in this lively, friendly and extremely popular hotel.
As we were visiting with a friend, we booked two rooms, one with a four poster king sized bed and a huge bathroom with his and hers wash hand basins, corner bath (with shower), luxurious toiletries; the other as a single (but with a full sized double bed) with shower and same luxury toiletries. Both had a well stocked tea/coffee tray but welcomed by us all, central heating which stayed on all night and which could be regulated from our rooms. A welcome change from the majority of top class accommodation.
We spent our days investigating the local area but were happy to return in the evening to enjoy a brilliant wine and cheese night. The place was packed and the landlord was serving a choice of quality wines at £1 a glass with a selection of cheeses also £1 a plate. Clearly a popular evening in the local area and a fabulous welcome back before we made our way (eventually) to our comfortable beds.
Although we arrived early (around 9.30 a.m.) we were shown to our rooms and were able to settle in at our leisure. We will definitely return to the Cross Keys in the near future and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Although there are roads to all sides of this hotel, there was no disturbance due to traffic. the b...
