“Dropped in for a drink”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

Wished we had gone there earlier. We were on a very pretty circuit from Elterwater on a showery day and popped in to miss the hail storm The menu and food looked good and the ambience was attractive. In door and our door seating. Friendly helpful staff.

As a group of 4 friends we have been walking in the lakes for one or two weekends a year since 1992. Over the years, we have stayed in some good and not so good places, but deciding to add an extra day on to our latest jaunt, (to celebrate our 21st year) the Three Shires Inn was chosen as the ideal destination. Rooms are spotlessly clean, Spacious, very comfortable beds, generous quantities of tea, coffee & biscuits in the room, with excellent food, with owners and staff that know how to run a professional business whilst keeping a welcoming and friendly atmosphere throughout. Fantastic Breakfasts, Beer (very important) kept in perfect condition and served at the correct temperature. Not surprising the Three Shires is always busy and has deservedly been recently voted as “the place to eat in the Langdales” by the BBC Countryfile Magazine. Enjoy, we will be back soon!

We were travelling through Little Langdale after photographing Wrynose and Hardknott Passes and stopped at The Three Shires for dinner. Words really can't describe just how good the food was, I had the duck terrine for starters followed by venison with summer pudding for dessert, whilst Anna had smoked salmon with vodka and beetroot mayonaise (without the beetroot) followed by salmon on a bed of mash with spinach and a creme brulee dessert, all of it was excellent, the service matched the food and to top it all they have a selection of 50 single malts to round off the most enjoyable of evenings. It wasn't cheap but who cares, when it's this good you don't mind paying for it and if you do then go to McDonalds-you get what you pay for, and sometimes (as in the case of The Three Shires) you get so much more besides!!!!

We will be back!

Set in stunning scenery the Three Shires at Little Langdale has been a favourite haunt for over 30 years. To celebrate my 70th birthday with all my family around this Lakeland hotel seemed to be the obvious choice. The hotel accommodated 24 of us including 8 children. The occasion was enjoyed by ALL the guests. Particularly noteworthy was the excellent cuisine, the friendliness of the staff and the homeliness of the venue. Comments from my guests have included "excellent venue," "splendid choice," and best of all "we loved the Three Shires." Planning for the weekend was straight forward, with clear advice and suggestions. From our point of view it was a hassle free experience enjoyed by all from the ages of 4 to those of 70+.

A short stay at the Three Shires was enough to convince me that a return is certain! It was a great place to stay - located ideally for walking both high and low in the beautiful countryside around it. I had often passed by on other trips and had determined that one day I would stay. I now realise that the stay should have been well before this, but I will make up for lost time! Everyone at the Inn was friendly, helpful and relaxed. Any question or request was dealt with in a way that made me feel that nothing was too much trouble. I felt that the staff truly believed they were there to ensure that guests had a relaxing and thoroughly comfortable stay.
Meals were very good - good hearty breakfasts, excellent packed lunches and dinners to look forward to. The menu seemed of a sensible size - offering a good choice but not such a great one that quality might be compromised. A great selection of local real ales, a good wine list and, to follow, enough different whiskies to ensure that anyone's particular taste is satisfied!
The ensuite bedroom was very comfortable, very clean and enjoyed great views toward Holme Fell and Wetherlam.
If you walk and you get wet then your clothing is dried for you and after a hot bath you can relax in front of the fire and plan your next day!
I go to the Lakes to walk, but the Three Shires is a place to stay whatever you choose to do there. A great inn, run by people who are concerned to look after their guests.

Lovely people, great food & a fantastic location. Have stayed here many times over the years & never disappointed. Homely, always spotless & always a warm welcome. Lots of places & things to do & see on the door step makes this the perfect place for me. Also my favourite breakfast in the lakes. Don,t pass this place by.
