“Lovely Pub”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

It was quite busy when we stopped at the Three Shires Inn for some lunch, but the food and drink was good and the staff were friendly and helpful. It's a beautiful area, although I found the narrow road quite nerve-wracking when driving up! Well worth the trip, though.

The Three Shires provided us with a perfect location for a two day break in the Lake District. The accommodation was comfortable and adequate and reasonable value for money. We particularly enjoyed the evening meals with the thoughful and sensibly priced wine list. There were plenty of enjoyable walks on the doorstep

Really a gastro pub with rooms - we had three of their 10 en suite rooms for two nights and rated them as highly as any we have stayed in in the Lake District at this price. This is not the height of sybaritic luxury - if you want that in this area stay at The Samling or Holbeck Ghyll and pay accordingly - but The Three Shires is very comfortable. I cannot disagree more with HappyWalker11 and can only assume that he was unfortunate. Dinner on both nights was excellent - good Lakeland portions of palatable fare at reasonable prices. My only reason for marking The Three Shires down would be the rather chaotic service at breakfast. One rather harassed waitress when the establishment was full was not enough for all the guests. Even so, she was very pleasant, so do not let this put you off.

A gem of a find and we would happily go there again.

Visited the Three Shires resaurant on Wednesday evening (15th Aug) and had a very poor meal. We expected more than just average pub food considering the prices, i.e. £12.95 for sausage & mash, but the actual food was not even good pub food quality. I think the Three Shires are possibly charging higher prices due to the lack of local competition and not a lot to do with their food.

It will be a 15 minute drive into local Ambleside in future!

we had 4 nights as a much needed break. The room was beautiful and clean. The meals were fantastic. We could leave the car in the carpark and spend the days walking in the hills. Then finish off inthe beer garden with the sound of a trickling stream with 1 of the great beers. I dohope we manage togo again soon.

Fantastic service, great rooms, friendly and clean. We stayed for two nights and had a great time. It is ideal for walking in the hills, as the location is at a quite valley near Wrynose pass. Food was amazing, top restaurant quality. Also nice beer garden to sit outside and enjoy a well deserved drink after all day walking up the slopes. It may not be a very obvious place to stay as its not on the main road through Windermere and Ambleside, but this is the advantage of a quite little stay. Its worth every effort to find this little gem.

Room Tip: Rooms are pretty much all the same size, so go for cheaper option.
