“Good food and service in an atmospheric old coaching inn.”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

We've stopped and eaten here a few times over the last year and have never been disappointed with the service or the food.
Good choice of tasty food, nicely presented and a great selection of different foreign and local beers to wash it down with. Very welcoming in winter, when the cosy atmosphere and open fire provide a nice warming stop on the way down from the Kirkstone Pass towards Windermere.
Our only complaint is that it is sometimes so busy that the car park is full and we haven't been able to call in and eat.

“Proper English pub”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

Had lunch here after walking over from Ambleside, we had possibly eaten brunch a little to recently to do full justice to the place so hopefully I can come back with a greater appetite and I may be able to upgrade my review. That aside though what we managed to cram in was very good and the beer and wine were also of a high standard. Talking of cramming, the little booth we were in and the table we had were a tad compact, but that added to the charm and the nearby diners seemed very pleasant! They had a proper roaring log fire and service was friendly, in fact it was welcoming enough to encourage us to tarry for an extra drink (which nearly resulted in us getting stranded on Wansfell in the dark, but that's down to my own idiocy). Definitely worth a trip!

“An old favourite”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

This has been a family favourite since before I was born (over 20years!). It is in a beautiful setting, has a great big roaring fire and a unique four poster bar. Look out for all the coins in the roof, an old tradition, adds a quirky touch. Went there last Sunday for lunch, the menu was so long, it was a bit daunting! All the food was delicious, it is more of a gastro pub than "typical lakeland pub" but it remains a favourite. I would prefer to sit in the bar area though as it has a lovely cosy feel next to the beautiful fireplace.

“A cracking proper Lakes pub!”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

We discovered the Queens Head when we lived in Cumbria 20 years ago. We now live elsewhere and have just come back from a two night break without the kids.

Our dog friendly bedroom was excellent. It was furnished to a very high standard and comfortable. The bar area is also dog friendly and has lost none of its charm. There was a roaring fire.

The food was stunning. We can't list everything but the beef pasty is fabulous as is the lamb and kidney pudding, lamb shank, filet steak, the belly pork, sardines....... basically everything my wife and I had was amazing.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. It is impossible to single anyone out. I stay in a lot of hotels and the staff were better at the Queens Head than at a Ritz-Carlton.

To sum up - great accommodation, great food, great staff and all in a genuine full of character Lakes pub.

“Wow what stunning food”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

Stopped here on a visit to the Lakes with friends who had been here before. The pub is old an authentic and has a great atmosphere. Staff are very attentive and the food is incredible. 2 of us had the ploughmans lunch, really we should have shared, it was enormous. All food is made on the premises and the pie had to be the biggest meat pie I had ever seen and it was delicious. My husband had the meat pasty and he loved it. Next time we come to the UK this pub is on our list to visit
