splendid time had by all of us used patterdale as a base and visited swimming baths in penrith, the steam railway at lakeside to haverthwaite, waterfalls at aira force and much more. also took our own boat to use on the lake. great service from bill grundy at ulleswater marine who really looked after us and we had 3 half days afloat and some great fishing.

Room Tip: lake view rooms and family rooms are great

On arrival, it looks much like 'The Overlook' from 'The Shining'. As it is, the only real horror presents itself as you walk in. In common with many establishments, they want you to pay on entry. On being asked why, the pleasant receptionist used the phrases 'it's our policy' and 'in case you leave without paying'. Charmed, I'm sure. Have it your own way but this is my policy - if you charge me on entry, I'm not using your bar, your menu supplements, buying anything you are selling or tipping your staff. With an excellent pub like the White Lion over the road, I probably wouldn't have used the bar anyway. The Patterdale's beer selection were the usual gassy European rubbish and a couple of real ales, Jennings Cumberland and one I'd never heard of but they were nothing to write home about. There's 'live entertainment' on Thursdays and Fridays - after seeing last night's, I would question the use of the words 'live' and 'entertainment'.

On the good side, staff are very warm and helpful, the 'included in the price' dinner was everything you could expect, the breakfasts are those 'get your own from the cooked buffet' affair so you get as much as you want and the room was no frills but very adequate. For a two star hotel and for what they are charging, mustn't grumble.

We have just spent the bank holiday weekend at the hotel. It was our first "walking" break as a group of six which was made all the more successful by staying at the Patterdale. It is a relaxing place to stay with genuine, friendly, efficient and courteous staff. The rooms were spotlessly clean and bright with excellent views. The food was tasty and plentiful and served with such pleasantness and efficiency that is hard to find in many places today. The manager must be very proud to have such a hard working team.

Room Tip: Rooms 104, 202 & 204 can be recommended.

Excellent stay here in May 13 (although you would never have known it from the weather). Customer service here is outstanding, but the food is also good, the rooms well equipped and overall this hotel offers excellent value for money for walkers looking for a comfortable place to stay in a fantastic location. The packed lunches are also good value and very tasty (especially the cake).

We stayed for three nights. From the 10th of may food was good lovely area. Fantastic staff. My single room was small , yet clean. The hotel attracted some lovely guests, we enjoyed many a chat. I felt rushed between courses at meal time. This didn't spoil my staff though ,the good points out weighed the bad

Room Tip: Single rooms are terrible. Far to small. Pay extra for a twin if. Your a single person
