“Wonderful house - quality accommodation in a perfect location”
Reviewed August 27, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

We stayed for a week at Eller How House in August 2012. The house is situated in the south of the Lake District, off the A590 near Lindale. As the pictures show, it really is a spectacular and special house in wonderful grounds. From the house, a footpath leads up the hill to the fell, where there are fantastic views of the region.

The house itself is wonderfully spacious and well presented. The two smaller (but still ample) en-suite bedrooms are on the ground floor, along with the kitchen/diner, upstairs is the huge bedroom with the huge en-suite bathroom and the little balcony, along with the very large living room area. The living room sofas are extremely comfortable and the beds and bedding in the house were all excellent. Combined with the thick curtains and country darkness (not to mention the amazing pillows), they led to some excellent sleep for all. The house's heating system is also excellent, providing us with plenty of hot water and heating the house very quickly on the one occasion when we needed it.

Most of the reviews below describe all the other wonderful things about the house, which we completely agree with. A couple of things that future visitors might want to bear in mind, though they should certainly not put anyone off staying. One is that the access to the house from the dual carriageway can be a little hairy for a nervous driver. Arriving from the south you have to pull into the small clearing in the central reservation, which means getting in the right hand lane, and slowing down appropriately as you approach it. From the north it is a more simple left turn off the dual carriageway, but since it's not a signposted junction, we tended to find the car behind us wasn't expecting us to come to an almost complete standstill to pull in there. Turning in from either side is not a problem in itself, but from either side requires the drivers behind you to be paying attention. After that there is a short narrow track down to the courtyard, and the entrance is narrow – the owners offer alternative parking space if that's a problem.

Another thing, which the owners are aware of, is that the wireless internet access doesn't extend throughout the house and on one day was not the most reliable. You can connect to the owners' wireless network from the landing area of the house, or from the area outside. John and Helen told us that they’ve been frustrated by Cumbria's generally slow broadband but that things are hopefully going to improve in the region very soon.

Overall, it's easy to see why nearly every review here is 5 stars and why so many people return – Eller How House is an exceptionally pleasant place to stay and we couldn't have made a better choice. Considering that anywhere at all in the lake district that sleeps this number of people seems to cost at the very least 75% of what Eller How House costs, the little extra money for the quality of accommodation this house provides is exceptional value.

Our thanks to John and Helen, who have done a wonderful job with this house and were most accommodating during our stay.

“Wonderful House and Grounds”
Reviewed April 30, 2012 for a stay in April 2012

We spent 3 days at Eller How with my daughter in laws parents. This was a fabulous christmas gift for us all from my son and daughter in law. The house is amazing and even though I had seen the property on the web site I was still stunned by the house and grounds.
John and Helen have thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible, and they are happy to share their wonderful grounds with you. There is a great walk at the back of the property which commands beautiful panaramic views over the lake district.
There are so many interesting places to visit in the area and a weekend is not enough - we will be back soon. Thank you

“Why go anywhere else?”
Reviewed April 9, 2012 for a stay in November 2011

We stayed at Eller How twice last year, once in March and once in November. Both trips were equally memorable and showed us beautiful Eller How in two very different seasons - we were not disappointed. We stumbled upon Eller How by mistake, we had rented a property via Lake Lovers and the cottage we had rented was far from an acceptable standard so we were placed last minute at Eller How after a fortunate cancellation there!! John and Helen could not have been more welcoming hosts, on the first or second visit. They clearly love the property preparing it immaculately for its guests. The kitchen has absolutely everything you could possibly need and more. We spent many a cosy night in on both visits, preparing meals ourselves and enjoying the homeliness of the lounge and drawing room instead of going out to eat so as to enjoy the house as much as possible.

We can guarantee that we will be returning this year. Having stayed at many holiday lets over the years, we have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Eller How. It simply is the best holiday home we have stayed at.

Liked best: The homeliness of the house and its cosiness. You wouldn't expect such a large house to be cosy but you'd be stuck to find one more cosy yet spacious!!
Liked least: Absolutely nothing!
