“Wonderful cottage, fab host and great views”

We stayed at High Swinside Cottage with our toddler and grandparents for part of the time for two weeks in July 2016. The cottage was conveniently laid out - with a cloakroom and utility area as well as cosy living room with lovely wooodburner as well as a practical and well stocked kitchen. We were pleased not to be short of any kitchen implements. The master bedroom with en suite is generously proportioned and the two other smaller rooms good for children, or adult guests in the case of the twin. We loved the outside area - the lawns, hot tub and of course the incredible views of the valley below. Diana is a wonderful host, she was very communicative and informative ahead of our arrival and the booking process was simple and easy. She made every effort to accommodate us by suggesting appropriate walks for us to do with our son, as well as providing eggs from her hens. In terms of the location of the property the valley beneath is stunning and access to Cockermouth is easy for shopping (although we got a supermarket delivery to the property), Keswick and Derwentwater are nearby. Then the local hills and lakes are great - Buttermere, Crummock and Loweswater (less well known but lots to offer). The only thing Diana couldn't fix was the weather!

Dear Elkie - thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay. It was lovely to have you here - including all the grandparents over the fortnight - and to get to know Finn a little. My hens will miss him coming to visit! Do come again - you were lovely easy guests, inspiring runners even, and will always be welcome again in the future. Very best wishes, Diana

“A Memorable Holiday Stay”
Reviewed July 15, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

As relative newcomers to the Lake District, we could not have come across a more ideal base from which to explore this wild and romantic corner of the region,
The property itself, one of three buildings of a converted farmstead, is set in a most tranquil location on a hillside overlooking a picturesque valley, with the owner living close by in a building where Jennings (a well-known local brewery) originally started up.
High Swinside is a most charming cottage (probably dated about 1800,or before), with comfortable furniture, exposed beams, and with all necessary amenities, including a wood-burning fire in the cosy living room which even at this time of year we were grateful to be able to fire up.
The view from the kitchen table is nothing less than stunning, and provides constant interest in the way that the weather can change rapidly from sunny and crystal-clear views one moment to a misty atmospheric backdrop the next. Shortly after our arrival we tried out the wood-fired hot-tub when the sky was full of drizzle and murk, and it was fascinating and pleasurable in a surreal sort of way.
The owner, Diana, was most welcoming and helpful throughout our stay, and nothing seemed too much trouble.
There is plenty to see and do, whatever the weather, and we appreciated the relatively unspoilt character of this part of the Lake District compared with the more obvious tourist centres such as Windermere and Ambleside. Visits we made included the Osprey viewpoints by the side of Bassenthwaite, the climb up to Catbells by Derwentwater (we would recommend ascending from the south end), the Ravenglass-Eskdale railway (from which you can walk up a ravine to a magnificent waterfall), and two indoor attractions in Keswick - the museum where there was a Wainwright exhibition, and The Puzzling Place, where there was a collection of weird and quirky examples of optical illusions and similarly unhinging artefacts!
All in all, a wonderful holiday, and a rental that would suit not only both serious climbers, walkers, cyclists, etc but also lovers of the outdoors like ourselves who will settle for less demanding walks and more sedate activities.

“Quite simply an amazing place to stay. We will definitely be returning.”

We visited the Vale of Lorton for a wedding in May and stayed at High Swinside for 2 nights.

High Swinside is not situated in the valley bottom, but is situated up on a hillside overlooking the valley. This location provides absolutely gorgeous, expansive views of the Lorton valley. As beautiful as the photographs on the website are, when we arrived at High Swinside we were completely blown away by the exquisiteness of these views.

We would highly recommend staying here for the views alone, but High Swinside has much more going for it in addition to this. The buildings are full of character and Diana has clearly gone to great effort to keep the garden areas (which overlook the valley) looking pristine. We particularly liked the benches out in the garden which were a lovely place for a spot of morning reading and also loved watching the swallows flitting around in the evening. The jewel in the crown of the garden area, though, is surely the wood-panelled, log burning hot tub. We have already mentioned the views, but now imagine being able to enjoy them from a hot tub with a glass of wine! For us, this provided especially memorable moments.

The cottage itself was well-equipped and clean, and notably the mattress was extremely comfortable.

Our stay would not have been the same without Diana, our host. Diana is a lovely, relaxed and friendly woman from whom, it seems, nothing is too much trouble. She will chat to you, advise you on things to do in the area or leave you to your own devices as you so wish. You could not hope to meet a nicer person.

If you would like to be welcomed by a friendly and kind host, offering clean, comfortable, attractive and well-appointed accommodation in idyllic, peaceful surroundings giving absolutely classic lakeland views from your doorstep (or log-burning hot-tub!) then this is the place for you!

We can't wait to go back to High Swinside to enjoy this experience all over again!
