Fisherground Campsite

Stayed on this campsite at the weekend and had a very different experience to others who had posted about this campsite. We were a party of 4 (2 adults, 2 x5yr olds) , new to camping so pretty unsure what we were letting ourselves in for when we saw some of the feedback. What we found was
- A lovely campsite in a stunning setting
- No over zealous quad bikers spouting rules but a friendly group of wardens going about their jobs in a professional way.
- We experienced none of the 'lights out' patrolling and managed a great barbeque, good banter and a few beers without any criticism from the wardens
- A great playground and pond for the kids to splash in and lots of friendly, well behaved children
- An 'interesting' pub in walking distance with good bitter but awful lager
- Clean, hot showers where 50p gets more than enough time to have a wash and warm up

Overall some reviews made this place sound awful but we had a great time, kept two demanding 5 yr olds happy and will definitely go back when it warms up next year.

This was our first camping trip and we decided on Fisherground because of the positive reviews on the UK campsite website and the facilities on offer for the children. There were four of us camping, myself, my daughter (5 years old) my friend and his son (5 years old).

A couple of days before we travelled, I discovered the negative reviews on trip advisor , but decided we would go anyway and at least we could prepare ourselves for the strict regime and the prospect of being verbally abused as previous posters said they had been.

Obviously we arrived with some trepidation to be met by a staff member on a quad bike, "here we go" we said. What a pleasant surprise, nothing like what we expected, there was no mention of rules and all he said about the grass was that it had been a wet summer and could we please go slow when on the grass so as not to cut it up.

Perfectly reasonable request we thought and so we set about putting our tent up. Once we were all set up we took the kids off the adventure playground and the pond were they happily played for a couple of hours. The scenery around the camp is stunning and we were very lucky with the weather.

Our evening was spent barbecuing and sitting around our campfire roasting marshmallows. I think the fact that they allow you to have a campfire really adds to the whole experience. All in all we found Fisherground to be a well run site in stunning suroundings with great facilities for the kids, who loved their first camping trip and cannot wait to go back.

We stayed at Fisherground at Eskdale during August Bank Holiday. Despite a lot of rain we enjoyed our holiday.
Alison and Mick gave us a warm welcome when we arrived and helped us to find a place suitable for our tent without having to drive all over the grass and round the site churning up the ground. Throughout our stay Alison & Mick were friendly and helpful.
The children's playground & rafting pond was a hit from the word go, whatever the weather they would have stayed there all day. We enjoyed beautiful walks, a ride on the little train that stops at the Site and each evening logs were sold round the site & everyone was having camp fires & toasting marshmallows.
The site rule of quiet after 10.30 pm was much appreciated, especially by families with young children. Alison, Mick or one of the wardens walked round the site every night despite the weather to make sure that everyone was reasonably quiet. Thank you.
The facilities were kept clean by 4 Wardens & there was always plenty of hot water.
We are already looking forward to visiting Fisherground next year.

I have camped all over europe and this site has to be the worst experiance i have had.
the owners have some power crazed ways and treat you like school children, the quad squad spend all day on patrol and have a mission to make you feel unwelcome.
if you wish to sit and have a quite beer and a chinwag, make sure that after 22.30hrs you only wisper otherwise your threatened with eviction.
i stayed one night then found another site. This is realy one to drive past.
also very boggy, expensive showers and a very unplesant experiance.
By the way i am a 40 year old male, not an 18 year old party animal.

Lovely site good for kids, good facilities.

However we too experienced over the top rules regarding cars and driving and mud. The owners were extremely rude and abusive. We experienced being shouted at and witnessed on a daily basis other families being treated this way, This was not for justified reasons but reasons such as driving around a parked car. On arrival we shouted at and told whwn I flap my arms at you it means stop and you do as I say. We were gob smacked at the degree of disrespect to customers. We are a quiet family with young children who have never caused trouble anywhere, Even our six year old passsed comment on what a horrible man owned it. We will not be visiting again.

Beware the Quad Squad! The people who run this site have very very very poor people skills; basic good manners seemed to be off the menu this bank holiday weekend.
The owners were patronising and rude to members of our family, shouting to people and cursing about the field and damage it by cars "do you know how long it takes to repair this [--] field?!" I don't think they realised that camping could get a bit muddy. Also incredibly sexist to one female member of our party, 'can you reverse the car, or do you need to get your dad to do it?'. And whatever you do, don't drive the wrong way round the track!!! The Quad Squad snipers will shoot you down within seconds!! We were well and truly gobsmacked by the way these people spoke to us. Jokes heard rolling round the site centred around the 'gestapo', 'boot camp' and far worse...
When we arrived, as a couple with two babies meeting other family members, we were advised - in no uncertain terms - of the rules of the site. Then we were escorted to our pitch, and told to unload from the road, no cars allowed on the grass. Oh, and can you 'hurry up please'. Ok, understand the grass and mud damage thing but every time another car came onto the site, you had to drive the entire way round again as there was no space to pass. All they need to do is put a bit of gravel down at a few spots to create little laybys so people can get organised.
The management were rude, sexist and I can see why they stand at the gate and demand your money before you get on the site and feel the wrath of the quads.
All this (and there were many other incidences) was a shame because Eskdale is a beautiful part of the Lake District, and this should be a lovely place to camp - unfortunately the management put a real blot on our stay and we won't be going to Fisherground again. I'd recommend no one else does either. Please don't pay these people to treat you badly.

What an idyllic site - great location and setting, perfect for couples and families. Just spent a few soggy days at Fisherground but in spite of the weather it's got to be one of the best campsites for walking, touring and sightseeing with the added bonus of the La'al Ratty single guage railway stopping at the site. There have been some negative reviews about the rules and regulations but these seem to be there to make the experience enjoyable for everyone (if you do want to laugh, joke and make lots of noise late at night then perhaps this isn't your kind of site). Also not having vehicles around especially when it's been so wet makes a great deal of sense as the ground gets churned up and ruins the emplacements - also who wants to be woken up in the middle of a rainy night by someone DRIVING TO THE TOILETS! The site is great for children who can run around and play in the pond, swinging from ropes etc and there can't be many places these days where you can actually have a proper camp fire.

The toilets/showers may be a bit limited but are adequate and clean (though with all the rain and mud we've just had, pretty difficult I imagine).

TIPs - 1.Take on board the rules and regs (for everyone's benefit) when you arrive and you'll have a great time.

2. Pray for good weather!
