Fisherground Campsite
Reviewed August 12, 2013

I thought we must have done something badly wrong but no. It seems we are not the only ones to have had a bad experience at fisherground.
After being 'shown' to our pitch we spent a whole 15 mins being told to the exact millimetre where to put the tent up. The list of rules that we were then bombarded with was ludicrous, and then after putting up the whole tent was yelled at by a 'warden' (says it all) for having tyres on the grass, so much so that the two year old in our party was in tears. We promptly moved on to a fantastic site nearby and had a great weekend. This site is everything that is wrong with campsites these days. Militant, badly run by extremely rude owners, overpriced and just plain horrible. I pity anyone who has to endure just one night at this hell hole. Don't give them your business they are in the wrong business and shouldn't be allowed to operate in this way. A huge blot on such a lovely part of the lakes.

We stayed here in our campervan from Monday to Friday. The campsite is spotless and there are wardens there all the time and always there to help. There is no phone signal so you do feel a little cut off, but that's a good thing if you really want to get away from it all. There is a pond with tractor tyre rafts and an adventure playground for the kids. It's back to basics where the kids can play outdoors and get wet and muddy and just be kids like we used to we were young. Each pitch has its own fire pit and you can buy bags of firewood and kindling each night. The ice cream van visits each night and sells marshmallows for toasting. My kids enjoyed themselves playing and making new friends, the whole campsite is full of the sound of kids playing and having fun. It's close to many visitor attractions too, the South Lakes Animal Park is well worth a visit and this campsite has its own little train station, and little steam trains stop regularly to take you to nearby villages. Muncaster Castle is only 10 mins away and is a great day out too. There is a country pub just 300 yards away too which does meals and sells real ale. The only thing I'd say is that the site would benefit from an extra shower and toilet block, as it can be quite a walk during the night if you're camped at the far end of the site and you need to take the kids to the toilet. But all in all a great place to camp :)

As a family of 4 we have only ever camped in the back garden, but decided we were ready for the real thing. Fisherground was the perfect place, the pitch we had was perfect, it backed onto a stream and a childs paradise. The children were safe to run about and make friends. We arrived just after the bad weather, and I have to say we were lucky with the weather- although the last evening and morning of packing up gave us a rude awakening as to what real camping is!! There is lots to do in the area, and we are planning our next stay for next year- upgrading the tent is the first thing! Last year we had a villa in the south of france- which my children loved, but my 8 year old boy told me that this was the best holiday ever!!! Shower and toilet facilities, we thought were excellent as were the washing up facilities!! See you next year.

When arriving after a very long drive from the south coast in devon we were shown to our pitch by a very friendly member of staff - who also remembered who we were through out our stay. She found us somewhere to pitch our tents away from the pond and adventure playground as we were a couple without family which was very considerate. The children here ran free and were happy to make friends with all other children the equipment and ponds encouraged this rough play and there were rocks to climb. This seems to be a great place to take children if they want the freedom and security to be able to let their children play away from the pitch whilst the parents have a well earned rest! On arriving we thought that this might disturb our week holiday however the 10:30 curfew was stuck to by all families and the site was silent at around 10:15 most nights

The fire pits was a Real plus as we are used to being told off for having fires. The staff even bring around wood, kindling and fire starters during the evening. Don't forget your marshmallows and cocktail sticks! Although these can also be grout from the ice cream van that comes around daily.

A great welcoming campsite in a great location for walkers and sig seers as well as those wanting a quiet family break.

As a previous poster mentioned this week was particularly bad for the weather but the facilities of tumble driers and warm boot drying cupboard made this weather more acceptable. It is the lakes after all, it's always best to expect rain.

We stayed for almost two weeks from 21 July. Arrived on a Sunday afternoon and check in was easy and quick. Campsite was fairly quiet and we had plenty of room. It did get very busy the following weekend and we did feel very squashed in with tents very close either side of us. When it was full the toilets and shower facilities were not adequate. Having said that, it was a beautiful site, and well worth the long drive from the M6. Even when it was very busy it was quiet at night which was important to us with a young family. The children met lots of new friends and thoroughly enjoyed the pond and playground. We stayed an extra night - which says it all really ....

We planned to stay at the site for a 4 night break (2 as a family, then 2 as me & kids). When we arrived it was chaotic with us having to wait for at least 20 minutes to being shown a pitch. There was an issue with car parking. The site was quite expensive when you consider the lack of facilities, although we were expecting that. The shower block was inadequate for the number of people and 50p per shower was a bit cheeky considering how much it was to stay. The kids enjoyed the pond and adventure playground although it was a bit rough and ready, which was fine with us but may not be for other parents. The campfires were great. However 2 nights in after a very wet night we woke up to the sound of running water and came out of the tent to a fast flowing river running past our tent that wasn't there when we went to bed, making us stranded on an island we had to wade through, thank goodness for wellies. It was mother nature at her best. As this was the start of my 2 nights with the kids and it was quite dangerous & everything was soaked I decided to go home early. Other campers were helped to move to safer pitches by the wardens. No ones fault but a bit of a disaster!

Making the extra effort to get to the Western Lakes is well worth it for this beauty of a campsite. A beautiful with simple yet brilliant things ( pond, tyres, zip wire)to occupy kids are the highlight. A struck 10:30pm curfew is adhered to making this perfect for families with young children. The perfect campsite as far as I'm concerned.
