Fortunately we ate in the Bower House Restaurant despite being told that an alternatives local restaurant had better food. We found a very pleasant ambience, eating in the bar. It only had a few tables but there was also the alternative of a larger room. The menu was interesting and imaginative, with a suitable range of options to enable it to be cooked freshly and not reheated or micro-waved. The quality of cooking and presentation was excellent and the service friendly and relaxed. It also provided excellently cellared cask beer and a reasonable wine choice. Overall an excellent place to enjoy competitively priced food and drink after a long day on the fells

The bar itself is nice and the staff were quite friendly
The food was also good and not too expensive.
However the table we sat at appeared to have been wiped down with a dirty cloth and the the surface was rather sticky.
In the right hands this could be an excellent pub - hopefully the change comes soon and the new owners/managers can build on what is there

We recently stayed in Eskdale, and after a hard days walk, we decided to stop here for an afternoon meal. The staff are very friendly, and welcoming, and the service was good - food came out after only 15 minutes. The size of the bar seemed a little small, but maybe I didn't see all of the pub! It was definitely cosy, but had a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

The food was decent, but not great, and a little too expensive in my opinion. We paid just shy of £12 for a steak and ale pie, which was nowhere near as tasty (or as generous with the steak) as that served by their competition. Portion size for the price was very poor. Much of the menu looked a little fancy and contrived, it didn't at all seem like a menu to be expected at a country pub. The children's menu is nice and varied however, and the selection of ales and wine is decent. We would definitely visit again, however probably not for a main meal.

We were in Eskdale for a drive and decided to have a meal in the pub as it looked inviting. The gardens are beautifully maintained.

The menu selection was good and not overwhelming with 100's of dishes to choose from! I had duck and my husband had lamb chops, the were both delicious. All the staff we met were extremely friendly especially the waitress Becky who we thought was doing a great job, despite being relatively busy she still smiled and had time for everyone.

Thank you for an enjoyable evening, we will be back!

We popped into this pub in June and was very surprised by the small bar area given the size of the pub. The menu lacked luster and so didnt stay.
