Having seen Simon on Great British Menu it was only a matter of time before we ventured to Cartmel to sample his 17 course tasting menu. What an experience this was. The techniques and presentation used by his chefs were incredible, it was artistry on a plate as well as being a complete taste experience.
One negative for me was the £60 wine selection was not outstanding and with hindsight would probably have opted for our own choices.
It is probably a one off as it was such a special night and repeating this could be a disappointment - maybe you just need to wait a while. Simon is, I believe, in the midst of taking over the two restaurants at the Midland Hotel in Manchester so we may in fact try that at some point, maybe for the set lunch menu.
I feel I must comment on the feedback given by two other reviewers regarding the quality of the rooms, we also stayed in Room 4 and our friends stayed in the Garden Suite. The review about Room 4 was very unkind and really unjustified and our friends were very happy with the Garden Suite. I would say that they are probably overpriced for the location.
If you decide to visit L'Enclume remember why you are going - this is a taste experience you will never forget so don't let anyone put a negative spin on this for you, just enjoy!

We stayed and ate at L'Enclume in early Jan 2013.
The food was out of this world, and very friendly staff in the restaurant who made the atmosphere welcoming and non stuffy. We decided to try the 'matched wines' which were quite expensive at £60 per head but beautifully complimented the food, and a good way of trying new wines (mostly white, with one pinot noir, one cider - a bit odd half way through the meal, and two dessert wines).
However, we had also decided to treat ourselves and stay in one of their rooms for the night and found that the accommodation was pretty disappointing for the price. We had the Garden Suite, which was a decent size with a bedroom, bathroom and separate small sitting room and would be lovely in the summer as it has small patio by the river that you can sit out on. However, various small details meant that it felt just a little bit shabby and overpriced - blind cord broken off, toilet roll holder off wall with rawlplug still sitting in the wall, shockingly bad sealant around the basin, marked and 'ridged' vinyl flooring in bathroom, a mini fridge propped up on a cheap table in the corner of the lounge, and no hint of any luxuries like bathrobes, slippers or even bubble bath. The parking was also a bit of nightmare, and it was a bit of a pain to have to trail around Cartmel to find your room in the rain - not really what we'd expect for £170 per night.

However, the meal in the restaurant was worth every penny, and HIGHLY recommended, hence the 4 star review

Sensational food at the brilliant restaurant. Restaurant Manager Sam is excellent and all the young staff enthusiastic if a little lacking in finesse for a starred restaurant. The tasting menus are well balanced and not too filling. The wine list is super. The decor is very charming.

However, we had room 4 which to say the least is tired. The furniture is worn out, arms on the armchairs are threadbare, two of four wall lights didn't work and the bathroom is 1960s council house (snobby or what?). There is even lino in the bathroom together with a shower over the tub with mould in the grout. Reception is 300 metres down the road, a bit inconvenient.

To be fair we saw photos of other rooms and they looked super but ours was grim. Small details like no room service and milk left for tea in the room in a jug but no fridge! Not good enough. The final straw was a typically old english 4ft 6in bed- just too old fashioned to believe.

Room Tip: They are refurbing some above another restaurant in the village.

We stayed in room 8 above the coffee shop in the square in Cartmel for 2 nights. We arrived at 9:15pm and as we did not know where to go we went to the restaurant where the staff were very friendly (Sam) and he told us how to find the reception at L'enclume House where Frank was waiting for us. He showed us the room which was huge and very comfortable. There was a mini fridge for the milk and the water which was a tad noisy as it was near to the bed - if it was put in a cormer somewhere else in the room it would be better. On Saturday night there was a live band on at the pub opposite and whilst it was good, it went on until nearly midnight and if you were looking for a quiet break it would disturb your sleep. Breakfast in L'enclume was excellent with a selection of fruit salad, fruit juices, cerials and then boiled eggs, full English, kippers or smoked haddock with tea/coffee and toast. They didn;t refresh the room until after 3pm which was a bit late for as we'd been out all day and there was an old key broken in the door lock which prevented us from locking the door (although no-one could access it from outside).
We will definately be coming back but might ask for a quiter room.

Stayed here for one night in December when visiting the restaurant. Room 17. The place is gorgoeus. Perfect mix of old brick and wooden beams, with modern comforts. Trendy furniture, thick new carpet, nice bed and big bathroom with both a bath and walk in shower and underfloor heating.
Nice touches like homeade cookies and fresh milk and water in the fridge, and the usual tea/coffee and flatscreen.
Yes, it may seem like quite a high price for Cumbria, but then most of the people visiting are probably here for the 2 Michelin star restaurant and can afford it. It's certainly far better value than the hotels down in here in London.

We stayed here for a Christmas treat in conjunction with eating at their restaurant.

We were in Room 14 - the Brashaw Suite which was a great size with a lovely bathroom with a big bath and a wet room style open shower (perfect for a soak after a walk).

The room came with a lovely tea and coffee set and home-made cookies for you to munch on.

There was a homemade soap, hand wash and shampoo, but you will need to take another bits with you. Great big fluffy towels but no dressing gown / slippers etc.

We didn't spend much time in the room, but it was well presented and very comfortable.

It said that it WiFi but it didn't work.

There is rather a lot of noise in the morning from the people in the rooms above, making it difficult to lie in. The breakfast is in the main restaurant which is about a 5 min walk away.

The staff were all very friendly.

Lovely treat.

Room Tip: I'd probably go for an upstairs room if I was to stay again

We have just returned from an overnight stay at L'enclume and can't wait to return. From the moment we checked into our room the service from all the staff was warm, friendly and accommodating. Full marks to Sam the restaurant manager for creating a great atmosphere to accompany the magnificent food. With its reputation L'enclume could be stuffy and snobby but the opposite is true. We felt very relaxed during the 4 hours it took to eat the tasting menu. Thanks to everyone.
