“Tremendous restaurant, but I'd stay elsewhere”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

Visited for a meal and decided to stay in the attached accomodation. The meal was incredible - myriad courses, all bar one of which was incredibly tasty and innovative. Be warned - we sat down to eat at 8, and didn't finish until 11 (not due to waiting - it took us that long to get through the taster menu!). The disappointment came in the accomodation - distinctly average for the extremely high pirces the charge. If I visited again, I'd look for somewhere else in the beautiful village of Cartmel to stay - but I'd race back to l'Enclume for the food, any day.

Our journey from Leeds had not been the easiest as the weather was quite grim when we arrived but the welcome that greeted us was so warm, we instantly felt totally relaxed. Frank kindly came down to the restaurant to check us in so we didn't have to venture out in the rain. He showed us to our lovely room and answered our questions about "the trip" with good humour, despite I'm sure being asked similar questions numerous times before.
We asked if we could bring forward our dinner reservation and were assured that this was no problem at all, so dined at 7 rather than 8.
We'd both been looking forward to the night for weeks so we had high expectations and the food delivered on every count. The oyster pebbles blew us both away, the smoked eel was simply sublime and the sweetbreads (which I was dreading more than a bush tucker trial) delicious!!
Every course was presented passionately and professionally by the two young girls, I'd love to have either of them work for me such was their enthusiasm.
Breakfast the next morning was another gastronomic delight, my friend had the full English and I the haddock. We both agreed that the scrambled eggs were the best either of us had ever had and the haddock was simply just delicious

If you like food then you should make a trio to Cartmel. The food at L'enclume and Rogan and Co is wonderful, and if you like your food and want a treat you should splash out. The village is very pretty and the a visit to the Priory is a must. This is the perfect location for a relaxing weekend away. The food and accommodation are relaxing, even though the food is at the top of what is available in the UK. If you've got time, then pop into the Diary and Brewery. And if you feel like something a bit different pop to the barbers for a pre-dinner wet shave.

It quite literally was a wonderful experience and certainly delivered the WoW factor. We opened our envelope with our menu in, but only to reveal the description of the course we were presented with at that time. A delightful end to a fabulous weekend in Cartmel for my partners 40th birthday. A big thank to the Manageress for the complementary cheese course and coffee due to our celebrations. Thanks Jo and David x

Shhhhhh please don't tell anyone - but we've just had the most wonderful experience staying at L'enclume House and eating there. We want to ensure there is space for us to go back, so keep this on the downlow. Read GavConnolly's review as he has said it all.

The two day package is wonderfully great value.. We'd been planning a anniversary trip since seeing Simon Rogan on the tele. We were nervous as we'd really built up our expectations but we were not disappointed. The Bradshaw room was comfy, smart and large! Dinner at L'enclume lived up to it's 2* status and the service was exceptional. I seriously think this is one of the best meals I've ever had; innovative, experimental, fun, tasty, exciting, filling and all round delicious. Well done Simon Rogan, you've got style without being pretentious which often I find restuarants become with such accolades. Nestled quaintly in Cartmel, adds to the alure of the whole vibe, it's a lovely village and I'd thoroughly recommend everyone to experience it.

Room Tip: Bradshaw Room was comfy and large although the conversion of this old cottage means you can hear the...

We had a weekend stay at L'enclume which was lovely. We had gone there to eat at L'enclume and we also had a meal at Rogan & Co in the village.

The rooms had charm. We were in Room 3 which is next to the restaurant. If you don't like hearing a bit of noise from the restaurant then this room is not suitable but it did not bother us.

Our room was on a slope, which added to the charm and my one complaint would be it was baking hot and so kept the window open the whole time. The breakfast was beautifully cooked and was not too heavy, which was important after our amazing meals out.

The other bit I did not get from previous reviews was that the hotel is split location, by about 100m. Didn't bother us but if it had been raining then an umbrella would definitely be needed.

Loads of places to stay in Cartmel but I did like the charm of our room
