“Quaint Traditonal Restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2014

We were in Broughton at a cottage for the may bank holiday and booked a meal here on the Sunday night. We were amongst the last in the restaurant as it was almost full. So initially service was a little slow but once things got going we were quickly lead to our table in the basement.

Food was good, mainly traditional British cooking with good quality local meet. A small criticism would be the vegetables were a little too well cooked for my liking.

Really great old worldly atmosphere with cosy lounge!

“Broughtons best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2014

We met David a number of years ago through a diving company in Tenerife and he had always invited us to his restaurant. We were in the lake district for Easter weekend and took the opportunity to do just that. Seems to be in the middle of nowhere but gets its fair share of visitors as well as locals.

Beswicks is in a charming period house in the village square and oozes as much character as the host. It's quaint without being twee and feels like going to a friend's home for dinner. With a roaring fire, it was comfortable and welcoming but the best bit was yet to come.

I ordered the carrot and apricot soup which was slightly spiced and delicious although could have been a tad warmer. My husband ordered the rack of lamb and said it was fab and I ordered supreme of chicken in a white wine, honey and lemon sauce which was delicate and exquisite. Accompaniments included boiled and roast potatoes, braised red cabbage, green beans and carrots all of which was excellent. We shared a divine red berry Pavlova and had coffee by the fire in the lounge.

Overall the meal, ambience and hosting was excellent and it was a journey worth making.

“' good old fashioned' service and excellent food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2014 via mobile

We visited here on a Weds eve as a couple and there was only one other family of four adults in the restaurant. I was glad there were some other people in as would have felt quite self conscious had they not been there. We had done our research and read up on the restaurant and owner, 'Dave' and were quite looking forward to meeting him. However unfortunately on the evening we went he was not there. The 'stand in' waiter was very polite and efficient but not very chatty which we did not find easy. You older your food whilst sitting upstairs in the lounge and are then taken to your table downstairs when your food is ready. The decor of the whole place is a step back in time and rather quaint and how restaurants used to be. Could not fault the food or the service, although as I said the waiter did not make us feel at ease. Would have liked to have met 'Dave' having read and heard so much about him! Maybe another time?!

“Our favourite restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2014

Beswicks provides a great atmosphere, excellent service and great food. We go there regularly including on New Year's Eve when they open extra rooms and when we have been the only people there - the welcome is always warm and the service excellent if more personal on the latter occasion.

As Beswicks is a small family run restaurant is wise to book - they are often fully booked and it also gives them a chance to prepare.

“Allways excellent.”

We have been to Beswicks many times and have never once been disappointed, I think Dave does brilliantly to run a successful restaurant after spending all day at his full time job.The food is always excellent, the personal service is second to none, (Dave even drove us home once!) all enclosed within a beautiful building,I personally prefer the dining room downstairs it is more intimate, especially with a roaring fire. Keep it going Dave we will be back.
