“Good food, good service, good prices and a nice place.”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Encouraged by TA, my wife and I booked in for 730 Saturday night. We got there a bit early, plenty free parking outside (August!) and had a nice drink in a proper pub in the square. Went over to the restaurant and had a warm welcome from the owner. The décor is old fashioned and comfortable. Big sofas, lots of pictures and a large fire place that wood have logs burning in the winter. Good options on food, great wine list modestly priced. No problem making choices. Downstairs to the restaurant, seats 45 apparently, nice atmosphere, starters came quick, I had the mushrooms which were excellent. Portion sizes good, good and decent wait for the mains. All good, I had the steak medallions which were excellent, nice size portions, impossible for me to finish. Good attentive service without interfering. Now I’ve been there, I can’t believe the malicious moaner who gave this place the bad write up about opening hours on 14th June 2013. One desert and a couple of brandies and a modest bill at the end of it all. Will certainly return.

“Child Friendly”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Five of us visited on a Tuesday evening. The service was excellent and the food exceptional with smaller portions given to the children. The whole experience is one of a high end restaurant but in a relaxed atmosphere where children are welcome. We will be returning and I recommend that if you are in the area you take time to have a meal here.

“intimate restaurant”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

We were glad we booked as very busy, even during the week. We ate from the bistro menu which was reasonably priced for the kind of food on offer. The restaurant is small and decorated in time period.
On arrival, we felt a little unwelcome but realise the staff were busy with a bigger party and regulars. The host was condescending and patronising. Perhaps he has a better opinion of his establishment than it deserves.
The food itself was ok but nothing special. A personal choice - starter of garlic mushrooms served with lots of fatty bacon which overrode any flavour of garlic, not good for a vegetarian. Dessert of lemon tart was very heavy.
All in all, we were quite disappointed having read previous reviews. We had gone to celebrate a special occasionally do not feel that the restaurant fitted the bill.

“Set menu a real star!”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

Had a Thursday evening meal. A set menu for 2 and it was just amazing from the start.
Met by the staff and given a glass of wine each and sat in the cosy comfortable seating area. Felt like being in someone's own home with a enormous selection of drinks, gentle music and comfortable sofas.
After relaxing there for a short while we were taken to our table and had a sumptuous and amazing three course meal.
Well worth a visit. For the atmosphere as well as the food.

“Lovely food and welcoming host”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

This is the first time we have visited this restaurant, but as it was our anniversary we were looking for something that was definitely not a bar meal. We had the midweek bistro meal which was roughly £10 per main, £5 per starter/sweet, there was a great choice and it was excellent value. We've had a lovely meal, food was delicious, host was very welcoming, we'll be going back!
