“Outstanding!”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

We chose the Woolpack because they are dog friendly and so many of the reviews said how welcoming they were. We stayed for 2 nights in the room with the jacuzzi bath. All the staff, and Paddington, the owner, were lovely as were all the other people we met in the bar, both guests and locals. Our dog, Maisie, got a lot of attention and managed to charm lots of people in to feeding her with chips!. The food was fantastic. We are both vegetarian but it was no problem finding things on the menu to suit us, the pizzas are gorgeous and I was also very impressed by the falafel burger but be warned....the sticky toffee pudding is EVIL...one piece is never enough!!! There was a very relaxed atmosphere, nothing was a problem and we were made to feel thoroughly at home. Our room was lovely and after a 12 mile walk up Sca Fell the jacuzzi bath was a fantastic treat. The dog was even too tired to try and get in with us! We will definitely be visiting again and I would give the Woolpack full marks and a resounding round of applause. Thank you for giving us a great weekend.

Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. Our Jacuzzi Room (Rm 8) is just the right tonic after a good days walking. We are so pleased that Maisie had a lovely time as we remember her well. Our menu aims to cater for all types of diet, including gluten free, vegan and vegetarian, with plenty of choice for all. Looking forward to welcoming you back to the Woolpack for more "Sticky Toffee Pudding"

Friendly, unpretentious accommodation. We stayed for four nights and in addition to breakfast we ate at The Woolpack every evening. The food was expertly cooked, using very high quality locally sourced ingredients, and every meal we had was excellent.
The staff were amongst the pleasantest and most hard-working we have come across; for most of them nothing was too much trouble and all of them were welcoming, polite and attentive.
We would definitely want to go again.

Room Tip: This is cottage-style accommodation and some of the rooms are small. If you book by phone you will b...

We camp at Boot, Eskdale, every year. We have therefore walked to the Woolpack Inn on quite a number of occasions. It is a very pleasant 20 min. walk, along the narrow, windy road. The Inn is now a fully refurbished, modern establishment, and caters for all ages. The front lawn has tables/benches for eating/drinking at. Nothing nicer on a sunny day, whilst you take in the fantastic scenery and peaceful setting. There is a separate area for family groups, with child's play area. Inside there is a very modern, comfortable lounge/bar area with fire for those cold, wet days. Just off that, there is a more traditional seated lounge area. The Menu is quite extensive and something on it to suit most people. On our last visit we had the Woolpack Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas. Not something I would normally go for, but it was absolutely delicious and very filling. The Woolpack now do their own, Italian oven baked, Pizza, which I believe can be delivered to the camp site. To finish off our visit, we sampled some of the excellent Real Ales and Cider they have on tap, some of which is produced in their own Micro Brewery at the rear of the building. I cannot comment on their accommodation, but we have been impressed by the rest of the place and would consider staying over sometime in the future.

Stopped here for lunch - the menu promised lots of fresh locally sourced items. My sandwich was bread from a sliced loaf and fatty ham, the lambs liver pate pate my husband had was so strong is was inedible and only one slice of toast. The vegetable soup was overly spicy with stale bread. the staff had to be called from the kitchen each time we wanted a drink, as they were busy chatting. We had asked for some home made chutney, which for some reason had been put on the plate with the pate. When we queried where it was, there was a very sarcastic comment from the waitress.

We took advantage of the reduced-rate immediately after New Year. The place was quiet (not too surprising) but that's just what we wanted. We were made to feel like it was home from home. Sitting in front of the wrought iron range in the dining rooms, sipping a drink and reading the paper - wonderful!

The Woolpack was in the middle of a complete renovation and the new bar was especially impressive. Whilst some of the rooms were a little tired décor-wise, the owners were completely open about this with a "please bear with us whilst we renovate" in the room handbook. We did - we appreciated the honesty. That said, the rooms were well equipped and very clean.

The food was excellent including the pizzas - and I would imagine they would do a take-out service (probably not delivery!) for the local Eskdale camp site 1.3km down the road towards Boot. The beer was on top form. This Woolpack used to be the home for Hardknott Brewery but they have moved elsewhere but they Woolpack still sells their beer.

The staff were friendly and helpful to a tee and therefore the Woolpack is "Highly recommended".

We watched the Olympic closing ceremony there and had one of their pizzas. The food was spot on , the staff very friendly and it was quite full so had a really good atmosphere. The surrounding views are breath taking and a pleasure to walk to from the campsite.

Hello, we are glad you had a fantastic time and it would be a pleasure to welcome you back to the Woolpack. The closing ceremony was a fantastic atmosphere and that is due to the people that came to watch it aswel. So thank you to everyone and yourselves that were there that night.
We look forward to seeing you again.

Excellent one night stay at the Woolpack Inn - so relieved to make it in one piece over the Hardknott Pass! Two humans and a dog really enjoyed this gem of a place - which was very busy despite being a pretty wet and miserable Sunday. Never seen such a big TV screen in the bar, food was nice and homely and bar had a range of ales - though a shame we were so easily able to drink it dry of the delicious Marston's Oyster Stout (we only had a few, honest). But best thing about this place - even better than the room (room 8 - thoroughly recommended) - was the staff. A warm welcome and good, friendly service should be the norm but, sadly, we all know it isn't (and I've certainly had several bad experiences in the Lakes) - none of the staff who served us during our all too short stay could be faulted - and their good humour, friendliness and engaging manner seemed thoroughly natural. And they all loved our Old English Sheepdog, which made him and us feel very special! Whatever the staff are being paid, it's probably not enough!

Room Tip: Room eight was excellent - brilliantly big bath (and big telly, too - though not as big as the one i...
